Recently I spoke with Mike on the phone, after he called to say that he thinks he has the solution to our noisy, poor manufacturer quality control hydraulic lifters. Its a lifter which is based on the original Delco design. It has a ball type check valve, vs, just the flat disc/plunger assembly. Here is the post Mike made earlier today, in the vendor forum, in case you guys missed it. ------------------------------ Hydraulic Lifters TA1405 We at TA try not to give up. In meeting with some of our major vendors over the past year we have been able to acquire a valve tappet that is very much like the GM units. These new lifters have a ball type valve which is showing very good results as some of you can back up that have run this type of tappet. This tappet is in stock under part number TA1405, '70 and later. Pricing will remain the same for now. Doing an in-car bearing replacement now.. too bad, this is a 350 with only 5 K on it, since it was rebuilt by another local shop here in MPLS... and it's another one of those "long story" rebuilds. I'm glad Mike is pursuing the ball check type lifters, they made all the difference in my motor:TU:. After looking closely at the flat disc style that design just invites problems, add to that some sloppy machining and you get some seriously noisy lifters. Hope you have the sucess I did:TU:
Yep, As I understand it, Mike sent back all the other sets of lifters he had on the shelf, because he wanted to switch to these new ones right away. TA 1405 JW
I am putting a set of these in right now, and hopefully later tonight, I will have so I sure hope you can post a result tonight! Mike's car is clattering and if this is the soulution we need to overnight those to get ready for Sat morning runs. The car has Lunati lifters now.
Skip.. it's close... just putting the radiator and fan back in now.. Famous last words.. "Ya, just stop by, and we will take a quick peek at it.." Or maybe it should have been "Stop by, and we will throw a set of cam bearings in it..." 12 hours later.. Found more than a couple problems, re-did a bunch of stuff... Some people should just not be allowed to build Buick motors.. You would not beleive how much oil was just pouring out the back of the front cam bearing, watching it with the intake off.. and just spinning the oil pump with a drill.. Wish I would have taken a pic, but did not think to.. Ed, Ya, I know a guy who works out there..so we should be able to work something out.. :gt: p JW
Jim Cool Will have to stop in again after the 4th when I am down there. Still walking through the motor maze?
Success! Boy, was a long day, but we got it handled, with new lifters, 3 new cam bearings, reworking the oil pump, and dialing in the adjustable pushrods. Nice running little 350 now, nice and quiet. Cam bearings, and reworking the oil pump virtually double his oil pressure. But it still looks like it's got Chevy crank clearances in it. I'm calling this lifter deal an initial success, but we will have to let Don do a few cold starts, and get some time on it before we can say for sure that we have finally overcome this problem. JW
Its all about the Machinist, Quality Work, Attention to Detail, and Quality Parts! Kudos,:beer Wish you live in WA Jim, or I lived in MN. ou: :bglasses:
OILING ISSUES What kind of oil pressure did he have before this? Our car seems to be fine as far as pressure goes. Did you just check the pump clearance?
Re: Success! Man.... that is great news Jim. It's nice to know the lifter problem may have come to an end.
Now if they would only stock sets of standard length hybrid pushrods for those of us who use the 430 rockers...
