TH350 staying in first

If I get on the gas a little (a little more than needed to get moving but not even half throttle) and then let off quickly, the trans stays in first gear and you can feel the car pull back down like it's engine braking and then it'll shift to second. I just noticed it today and I started freaking out since it's been working PERFECTLY for the past 2 weeks. It seems intermittent as well, sometimes it'll do it, sometimes it won't. :Do No:

Check the detent cable. Sometimes they stick or jam inside the pan. Is it adjusted properly?

I would say to check the vacuum to the modulator, but if it was off I dont think you would have engine braking.

After reinstalling the engine in my car last summer, drove home, in town, and it wouldn't shift out of 1st all the way, just wound up. Brakes were fine though. Got home and found the vac line was not hooked up to the TH350, fixed that issue, and no more problem.

I have no idea. How can I check it?

Could a big cam be the cause of this?

Absolutely! A big cam will produce very little vacuum. If you pull the vacuum hose off the modulator, you will see a small screw inside the nipple of the modulator. Not sure how much you will need to turn it. Im my case, I had to turn it in (clockwise) three full turns. I went from a Lunati SP1X to a TA 308S and my trans wouldnt shift out of first.
