Taking a break for a while.

Having spent entirely too much time on these forums lately and I think it's made my brain blow a gasket or something.

I made some gross errors in my camshaft judgements and calculations because of a misunderstanding I had about centerlines and their relationship to LSAs...

I apologize to everyone for giving misleading information, though it was unintentional.

The figures aren't THAT far off, but I expected more from myself. I'm putting myself on restriction from the forums for a while so I can sulk away in embarrassment with my dunce hat firmly in place.

Thanks everyone for being such great people and being my friend. I'll check back in from time to time I suppose, but right now I'm not feeling very well and my advice machine threw a rod.

Don't feel bad Gary, staring at cam specs that long and trying to figure out as much as you have in the past couple of months would short circuit anyone. Finding your own mistake is half the battle to going to the next level.GL

    Gary,
Hang in there and don't beat yourself up too much! Every great idea started out with a vision, and most have had trial and error before it was a great idea.

The only person that hasn't made any mistakes is the person that has done absolutely nothing.

Gary, hang in there. Most don't even know they made a mistake... You are working at it and trying to help others!

Its VERY easy to overthink this stuff about cars, it really isn't THAT important, its suppose to be fun.

Gary. Are You Kidding Me? You were a GREAT help to me. I figured out which cam to buy for my 350 with your help. But with the Bad Weather coming in I wont be able to test it till next spring. Hang in there buddy. When I was a Tinsmith I made mistakes all the time. Things are hard to figure out. But you know what you're doing so step back and look at a bigger picture. I'd get pissed, step back and tear into it again. It would take me a whole Day just to do the layout on some fittings I had to make. Triangulate just One point wrong and there goes the whole day. Start over again the next day. It would make me doubt my intelligence but I tore back into it. When I got it right, Man I felt good about it. Then I had to form it. That's a whole different ballgame. But like you said, Step back and do something else for awhile. The break will do you good. Then tear back into it. Good Luck Man. And don't be so hard on yourself.

Don't take it too hard, we all make mistakes. After owning my service station for 5 years I discovered I had been giving incorrect directions to a local ball field...musta been some really ticked off people...:Dou:

Hey, at least you can admit it on a public forum, that is way more respectable than throwing up a smoke screen which is what the more arrogant ones would do!

You guys are really awesome. Anyone ever tell y'all that?

It's more of an embarrassment than any harm that could have happened to myself or anyone. The math's sound and the ideas are fine, it's just my understanding of centerlines and LSA were skewed, which threw a couple things off and makes me look like a dumbass, which I'm not, so it pissed me off.

Though I do have the ethics to come out up front in front of the whole world and admit it, I also would like to say that it's not 100% my fault...as I was still learning all the ins and outs, the stock Speed Pro cam seems to be off a bit, which affected my learning of the process. I should have seen it, but I didn't--until last night.

And to be fair, no one at all has even so much as hinted or pointed out this mistake...which makes me wonder if everyone was just being super nice and didn't know what to say, or that I'm not the only one who misunderstood some things.

So all in all, it's a nice learning event. I'm no quitter and I'll use this as a means to learn and teach. Maybe someone else out there is struggling and this will help them come to a similar conclusion?

I was making this camshaft stuff way more complicated than it is, and after all the overthinking and juggling incorrect numbers, going to the proper way is going to be a breeze! lol

I was hanging out on the back porch smoking a cigarette thinking about all this because I was struggling with a figure that just didn't add up. Then it hit me like a baseball bat upside the head, and I was like WTF???

SO yeah nom nom nom gobble that humble pie all up.

Lesson learned. Moving on now. Thanks for the support fellas. Means a lot to me.

I figure it's probably just karma coming back to bite me in the ass. I can be a bit abrasive sometimes when dealing with others, and I'm learning to be more polite and understanding. :TU:

Gary, you remind me of me! You are your own harshest critic! I do the very same thing. I recently made an egregious error in engine calculations myself concerning dynamic compression ratio. By the time I realized it, it was too late. I don't know how many nights it kept me up! But in the end, a lot of us are hobbyists and not professionals, just trying to learn as we go. So quit beating yourself up, you weren't the first and won't be the last. Just keep on keeping on and you'll come out on top for sure!

It's all over the place in my posts regarding camshaft suggestions.

The problem is I had a misunderstanding between the relationships of the centerlines and LSA's. I don't know why I thought the centerlines were based on something else and the LSA was just the average between the two, when the LSA is the central focus on where the centerlines will be based.

It's really a simple mistake, but it threw off some equations and I abhor typos and mistakes. I'm probably overreacting. I just felt real dumb and was upset with myself.

    I'm over it now. Break's over. :p

Well since you're seizing this golden opportunity to critique me, I'll humor you.

You're right. Most responses are overthought, overanswered and made more complicated than the person asking the simple question wanted. What they'll walk away with is not a simple 'ug, yoo do dis an dat wil happen' answer, but alternatives that may enrich their experience or personal knowledge.

I like to tackle things from an engineering perspective before getting my hands dirty on a project that could leave a person sitting in the middle of a bunch of parts covered in grease having to go back to the computer and cover the keyboard with oil and sludge while asking more simple questions.

To each his/her own. You're entitled to your opinion and I'm glad you shared your thoughts. :TU:

Believe it or not, I am trying to help others while learning myself. I continuously say that I'm still learning and that I don't know it all.

I don't have a huge shop dedicated to building SBB's, putting them on dynos, flow testing equipment, therefore everything I say is hot air and boring to some people.

At least I'm trying, and I have the balls to admit it when I'm wrong. I contribute to the community by offering up advice and information which is for the most part, correct and relevant to the subject at hand.

If you don't like what I type, then don't read it. I'm not breaking any rules here.

I've looked back through your posting history and see nothing but condemnation toward others for not catering to your specific questions. Because, you know, we're supposed to drop everything and hover around your issue with all the proper answers and use the words you want to hear.

This isn't a positive personality. You're a hands-on kind of guy, which is great. So why not share some of your experiences with others so that you can help someone instead of asking for advice and then busting their balls when it's not what you want to hear?

I'm not trying to be an asshole here, I'm just telling it like I see it, much like you are. Let's see how well you can take it as well as dish it out. If not, it's a double standard and someone has some issues to contend with before attempting to contribute to these forums.

Peace man. The chip on your shoulder isn't my problem.

You'll notice you can't please everyone. I do realize that it was 'your' thread that I was soaking up a lot of talk in. We all chatty chat it up all over the place, doesn't matter where it is.

I'm very sorry this displeases you.

If you're that concerned about it, contact an administrator and file an official complaint about my posts, and I will comply with whatever reprimand he/she issues forth.

Hopefully everyone has learned a thing or two and we're all the better for it.

Keep on writing, I like to see and hear different views on this camshaft talk. I think we really do not know enough about it. How about what do you think about a 108 LSA, is it better than 110 or 112. I use a 116 LSA in my cam but would a 108 be better and what would the difference be in the different LSA's. Keep Rocking,

    Guy
