After installing MSD module and coil in my HEI my tach jumped up and down at 3000 rpm. I installed MSD tach cure kit : a wire with something in line. Plug it into existing tach lead. Thought problem was solved.Took car out today to give it a little exersize and now the tach jumps around at 4000 rpm. At least it is moving up on the scale. I will contact MSD and ask some questions. Anyone out their had the same problem? Before installing MSD the tach worked perfectly.Ken :Do No: :Do No: :Do No: :Do No:

    Ken,
I had that kind of trouble with my stock tach and Stinger S-4.. It would jump around at cruising RPM. I tried running a separate wire and regrounding it. Nothing seemed to help. Year one sells an ignition amplifier and conditioner. What they do except lighten your wallet, I have no idea:Do No: I've been looking to have my stock tach rebuilt, but in the meantime I installed this Autometer. It looks so good, and is so accurate, I been putting off the rebuild.

    msd ?

Larry : I think I would leave the Autometer tach in place. It looks really very classy. I talked to msd this morning and they told me I should change my $90 set of MSD spark plug wires every year. Oh that made me real happy. They said that after a year the plug wires will break down and cause interferance with the tach. I told this genteleman that if I changed sp wires I would buy Mallory. That did not make him a happy camper. He also told me to change plugs and check all ground wires and the tach may be at fault. Funny it worked before I installed MSD unit. Received e-Mail from a real tech rep at MSD and he told me they would send a differant type of tach fix kit. That is good news. Well ,we will see if it gets here or not. Never had a problem like this before. I have always used Mallory unilite distributors. No problem with tach ever. I'll let you know what happens and i will also look at year one cataloge for the item you have mentioned. Keep the Autometer tach. It looks better than factory unit. Ken:Dou: :Dou:

    Thanks Ken,
I thought only carbon core wires break down after a year. MSD's should be metal spiral core:confused: , should last longer than that. Let me know how you make out.

    Hey Larry,

I like your tach setup as well....... Not only does it look good, you can see it ALOT better than the factory unit AND it's accurate!!!!

Could you type in the details as to what you did to get it in? Did you have to cut anything up?

    Thanks,

    Rich

    Hi Rich,
Actually, it was very simple to install. I had an old clock that was shot, from my 72 Skylark. I removed the guts from the housing,(had to cut out the back of the housing) and mounted the Autometer tach inside the housing. Then it bolted up to the backside of the dash like stock. I teed into one of the lighting wires for the stock tach, used the stock tach coil connection, ran a switched 12V line, and ground, and it works great. The Autometer part # is 2499 ( 3 3/8" 8000 RPM in dash tach). Paid about 75.00 from Jegs. You could probably use any housing (speedo, idiot light, etc.) and it would work. Hope that helps.

Larry I have not found exactly what is wrong but the factory says the coil is bad. I am going to dump the entire deal and go with MSD 6al, billet distributor and coil. I will put my old coil back in hei just to test their coil. My parts dealer gave me back all the $ involved with the HEI conversion to appy toward other items. I will see if all of this works. I also needed the rev limit feature. Ken:beer :beer :beer

    Ken,
Sounds good! Make sure to check out MSD's new line of ready to run distributors. Unlike the billet ones, these have vacuum advance, and can be run stand alone, or with an MSD box. Good Luck.

Larry: I did decide on the unit with vacuum advance. Ken:Dou:
