Not sure if I even need one. I will be running a solid roller with the following specs: 244/250 @.050, advertised 284/290 .608/.616 lift. Its ground on a TA blank by Iskenderian. Does a cam like this require a girdle on the lifter bores? Has anyone here broken a lifter boss when running a block girdle? does anyone have the install instructions for one? I'd like to see exactly how its installed. Thanks.
I'm not sure, the engine was already assembled and run. I'd have to check the springs and the installed height. Most likely they are whatever springs TA sells for a solid roller.
Check with Isky.. give them your intake valve and retainer weight, and expected rpm range, and get a recommendation from them for that particular lobe profile. JW
Thanks Jim I'll do that. The lobe numbers are from their street roller list, lobe r-412 intake and r-359 exhaust if this helps.
Granted all blocks are different but what would one say is the limit on spring psi b4 a girdle is needed? How much more will epoxy raise the limit?
Can't tell you about epoxy, never done that.. I use the lifter bore girdle, and I have never had a block break the bores out. Your right, it is total speculation as to where the point is that you need the lifter bore girdle.. I was looking at the lifter bores on a 430 block here last week, and remember thinking I would have no issue running 600lbs on the nose, on those beefy bores.. they were thick! On the average 455 block, I guess I would say 450- 500 lbs on the nose would be the limit, so most all hyd rollers will be ok, but most solids will require the lifter bore girdle. With the advent of my new Johnson Hyd roller lifters, rated to 585 lbs open and 7500 rpm, there will be very little reason to run a solid roller cam in an iron block, going forward here, so that is some good news.. JW
Jim, Can you give a little more info about the Johnson Hyd roller lifters. When you say "my" are they proprietary for TSP? Have you worked with them in their development to fit the stock Buick blocks? Do they use needle bearings or are they the bushing type? I've heard a lot of complaints lately about needle bearing roller lifters on the street and it kind of scares me to use them for a fairly high HP street/strip combo. I understand that the new "hot ticket" is going back to a special type of bronze bushing. What's your take on all this? I would love to run a hydraulic roller lifter setup in my new engine. This could be the ticket. More info please. Steve
If in doubt buy it and install it. Cheap ins. There was one for sale used on the board a short while ago
Steve, I was only involved with these in bringing them to the market for our BBB engines, and doing the testing on the first set. I do believe that they will be available with bushings in the future. JW
Ok, Thanks Jim. Any Idea when they may become available, or who I can contact to inquire? Could you PM me with more info like prices, availability, etc? Thanks, Steve
