What would be the good, Bad, or Ugly when using an aluminum flywheel compaired to an all steel one on a standard wieght 72 GS 455 car?
    Thanx

We put one on a friends Chevelle years ago. Took it right back off. Terrible to drive, easy to stall and didn't do anything for ET.

I used TA's steel flywheel last year on a project and it was a real nice piece for the money. I would use it over a resurfaced stock flywheel.

So if one was to be building a very light drag car this would be the application for a light flywheel?

I have no experience with your application other than what I mentioned.

One of the best 4-speed cars I've seen run is this:

Autocross I think is the place for a light flywheel. Where you run the whole rev range repeatedly. A heavy flywheel is nice in drag racing because once you get your rpm's up at the line the inertia will help keep the rpm's from dropping too much when the clutch is dumped, and again help keep the rpm's up when you shift (even if you don't lift!).

Yes, or one with high starting-line (1st gear) overall ratio, higher than 10:1 .

When i was a kid i had a Roadrunner with a 440, light flywheel, and a V-Gate shifter, i could get the speedo to say well over a hundred and not move more than 10 feet. shifted really fast. I would think that a 455 30 over, m-22, 373 in the rear would get me down the track faster with some soft 26",28" or so tires?

Light car light flywheel heavy car heavy flywheel.

In my Chevy LUV with the 455/4spd i had a 12lb lighter then stock billet flywheel and with the T10 4.11s and 31" tires it was alright (trk. was 2400lbs.) But when i went to the wide ratio 2.88 1st. it was a dream to drive. The other trans was a 2.20 close ratio same as a Muncie M21.

When i build my 66 Sport Wagon i will use the same trans and flywheel even though i have a billet stock weight flywheel (new)i would use an aluminum one if i had it as i like the car to accelerate quickly.

My 72 GS is all stock no AC with power steering and power brakes, and M21.
But the engne is a 455 with a bit more power than it had.
So you think that i would be happier with the light wheel?
( i like quick as well)
