Hi guys, I am planning on putting a switch pitch th-400 in my car. Will a converter from an st300 switch pitch give me a higher stall speed. I know that I can buy aftermarket from a few places, just seeing if I can do it cheaper since I have the parts already. Will this give me anywhere near a 3500 in high stall mode? Is the v-6 converter any less durable than say the 430? Thanks Tom

probably would have an effect if it fit, but i don't know if it will. i would look up jim burick(sp) at pae.... nice fellow. doubt it would give 3500 if it did fit. jim wiese of tri shield performance sells them as well if i understand right. nice fellow also.

I would buy a new, worked, converter. i have heard of some of these stockers ballooning and pushing the crank forward (if i heard that right, source unknown)

    possibly somebody may elaborate.

300 is about 1" smaller in dia. Supposed to be good for 200-300 rpm.
Will fit your SP400. Stock stall is 1800-2600. So, you should be ok with a mild cam at 2600.

Yes , the t-300 s-p converter will fit. No, you won't get 3500 stall. About the most I would expect would be about 2600 to 2700 at best, depends on what converter you use. They used different fin angles in tha various models. The other concern is the old original converters do have bushings inside that deteriorate over time, if these are worn, the converter will not operate correctly. Jim Burek P.A.E. ENTERPRISES

I have used converters out of TH-300's in TH-400's in the past. About 2700 stall behind a 455 is all you can expect. The converters PAE has are quality units and they can customize the stall some to more closely match your combination. I have not used those from JW, but they are probably the same. I recommend you not use the stock unit, it will not do what you are asking and the aftermarket will make you much more happy. On the otherhand, make sure you are completely honest with your needs for stall speed, 2500 is a big jump from a stock non-SP stall and will give a huge improvement in performance with a relatively stock combination.

Call the guys selling converters, they are more than happy to talk to you about your combination. The money you spend on a phone call will save you hours and hours of frustration.

I have a modified 350 in my 72 convertible, I swapped out my TH350 for a TH400 s/p, I located an 11" s/p converter from a TH300 and had Jim W. rebuild the converter for me. I get about a 2,800rpm stall now and I really like it. I would highly recommend JW for a converter.

What you had was a 12 inch converter from a t-300. Gm never made an 11 inch s-p converter.
