Ok, guys. Here's the lowdown...I got a 350 SBB from a board member, it's a 1970 SBB 350-2, and I am swapping out the V6(231-2 V6 oddfire) and swapping in the '70 350 buick motor. I did a quick internet search on parts numbers on the autozone website, for the starter, and the starter numbers for a 350 and my V6 are the same, so in other words, my starter will work w/ the V8, beings that they are the same. Now, I did the same search for the alternator, and I came up w/ "slightly" different numbers...for the v6 alternator-DL7127M/for the v8 alternator-DL7127-12MDP

The thing that confuses me w/ the alternators, is that they both are a "duralast" 63 AMP application, so even though the parts numbers are slightly different, will the v6 one work on the v8?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Im going to keep this thread "updated" to let everyone know how the swap is going and to use it as a basis for my questions that might pop up once in a while.

    Thanks!!! :Comp:

I'm thinking the Alternator for the 1970 is externally regulated, while the 1976 is internally regulated. However, this is a guess. I myself would use an alternator original to the year of the car.

They both put out the same amperages(63 AMPS), and the V6 alternator I already have on my car should bolt up to the 350, so I don't see, really, why they wouldn't work, but then again...

    Thanks! :Comp:

That is good advice, Dan, I would have to use the V6 one, anyways since it's the only one I have(unless I really did buy a rebuilt/newer one), and plus if it will work then I won't have to buy a new one(although it wouldn't hurt if I did, but the saying goes "don't fix something that doesn't need it"...). I might have to modify the bracing a bit, but that ain't no biggy. :TU:

    alec296 i need another buick

    350 swap

alternater from v6 should be fine .does the car have ac as the 350 had a
dual groove pulley for ac that could be the diffence for v6.
also it could be how alt is clocked for wiring
on my 70 it did have the short waterpump so you might need the
long pump to match up pulleys.v6 pulleys and brackets will bolt right on
the belts might need to be a bit longer though.you might have to use the v6 motor mounts .i had to on my 79 regal v6 swap but i got turbo buick
poly mounts which helped take up the strech the v6 mounts will have.

Theres no hurt in trying to bolt that alt. on your 350. What trans are you using with your 350?

Oh right you just had that trans freshened up didn't you. I know you've waited a long time for your Buick 350. I 'm sure you'll have as much fun as I do in my 350 Century! Keep us posted on your progress Cody... Sean

The V6 may have a different pully size than the V8 on the alternator. Not a big deal. You will be fine.

    An update!

Well, the motor is just about ready to pull, as today I got the last bolt out that mates the tranny to the motor(there are 6 of them). Now the only thing left to do is get the exhaust off and the motor will be ready to pull! I plan to get the exhaust off tommorow, and then I plan to get the V6 out and get the 350 in on saturday or sunday(with the help of a board member!). I took some pics today and will continue to do so untill the swap is "completed". :TU: I don't know when I will get them up, as I have no scanner/digital camera/or anything to get the pics on the internet, but I have a few friends and a cousin that could possibly help me get them up. I plan to get them up soon, or at least as soon as possible. I will post them/and all the info. required to do such a swap in Darryl Roeder's "a first time guide to a performance SBB" thread, along w/ the pics! I'll keep you all updated!

    Thanks :Comp:

Did you already get the bolts between the torque converter and the flexplate? Goodluck, I'm sure it will be no problem.

Yep, did that as well! And today, as planned, got the exhaust off so now the only thing left is the motor mounts! :TU:

Yep, this is one of the most exciting things I have ever experienced! I am enjoying every single moment of this swap! :TU: I have another update to add today: I got the motor mount bolts/and nuts out and the motor is now officially, ready to pull! All I need to do now is rent/or somehow(out of total respect I owe-a board member is offering me help on that :TU: ) get a hoist and pull the v6 out and put the v8 in! :Comp: So far so good, it shouldn't be too long now, like I said before, I will keep everyone updated as more and more updates follow! :TU: :Comp:

    What is this?

I got to looking around in my "parts-collection" of all the parts I took off of the motor, and I ran in to a hose that I remembered was connected to the carb and forgot where it went from there, but it is snapped about halfway down, and this is the only pic I could find that looks even close to it! Don't know what it's called and don't know what it does :Do No: Anyone have a clue as to what this hose might be for? It came off the '76 231 I am pulling...

    Thanks!

I'd say just don't worry about it and when it comes time to hook up the new carb we can help you get the esential hoses on from there.

It's tough to say. It looks too small to be a fuel return from the carb so it's probly a vacuum line of some sort. Do you have any before the swap pics that you could look at to find out where it went? The hose is trashed anyway but it would be good to know what it was for. I've never seen the rope cover over the hose before? Goodluck.

    GoldBoattail455 462 -> TH400 -> Posi

On my 4 barrel rochester the same thing happend. I think is the hose that is on the front passenger side and it goes around to the back of the intake to the PCV valve on mine.

I found my engine swaps went easier when I left the tranny attached but I was usually working alone (when dropping the engine in).

Could that hose have gone from the choke to the passenger side manifold?

I feel your excitement. Wish I could be busting a knuckle with ya.
