My horn wasn't working for the longest time so I finally looked into it and found the harness disconnected from the relay. After I plugged it back in I realized why I unplugged it in the first place. The friggin thing won't stop buzzing. It stops if I close the driver's side door but if I leave the driver's side door open it keeps buzzing even with key out of ignition. I have console shifter but still have original column shift column. I thought maybe the collar needed to be repositioned but it didn't help.
The key buzzer switch is inside the column, behind the directional switch. When you put the key in, it forces a plastic tab that is part of the lock cyl to activate the buzzer switch. So...it would seem like it's either the buzzer switch, or the ig cyl tab. You would need to remove the wheel, and turn sw to get at either item. If the buzzer sw is ng, it will probably fall apart when you try to get it out. Tilt buzzer switches are pretty easy to come by, the other type is not easy to find. Google Chevelle or Corvette key buzzer switch (images) for a look. KeyBuzzerDiagnosis (1.9 MiB)
If you just want to stop it from buzzing the wire colors are pink and black on the turnsignal switch. At the lower part of the column at the turn signal switch connector you could cut the pink wire. Just check my memory on the colors. I would test first . If you want to make it work properly. Then you could just unplug the turnsignal switch at the bottom of the column. If it stops buzzing you know the problem is in the column.
Frank, it would figure mind's not tilt. Lou, when you say turn signal switch, if I cut or unplug, will turn signal still work?
The key buzzer is only one part of the turnsignal switch. You will only be cutting 1 wire on the plug at the bottom of the coulmn. I will look at a switch I have here and get back to you as to the correct color.
Just got back to this. Thanks man. I will have to dive into this real soon. Can you get the replacement parts to fix this problem? I wouldn't need a new ignition cylinder correct? That would mean new keys etc.
I would just unplug the wire on the buzzer. No cutting, and I think you can reach up under the dash without taking everything apart. Speed alert uses the same buzzer, so if you have that you would lose the speed alert as well.
If memory serves me right, I had something like that years ago. In my situation I futzed with the door jam switch and found one was shorting out after replacing no issues.
I actually tried that, but the buzzer under the dash is also the relay for the horn. It has a three pin connector. If I disconnect the one that makes the buzzer stop then the horn doesn't work. That's how this all started. I couldn't figure out why my horn wasn't working till I climbed under the dash to look at the relay and remembered I unplugged the stupid thing. I'd like to fix it right though. Maybe fortunate for me, I have a spare steering column in the basement I think from a 71 GTO that maybe has an unbroken buzzer switch or whatever piece I might need. What a PIA man. I hate cars. LOL
Ken . It depends what is stuck. Perhaps its the plastic wedge on the end of the key cylinder. That is the piece that pops out when you push the key all the way in . It could be the plastic switch that the previous mentioned wedge pushes against . If you go after those you will have to take the wheel, lock plate and turn signal switch out to access them and be able to test them. You can snip the wire without removing anything except the small cover plate at the bottom of the dash at the steering column. For a test just unplug the turn signal connector at the bottom of the column and see if it stops buzzing. Where are you from in Maine? I spent a lot of time around Greenville , Jackman and Millinocket on the Golden Road.
