i just purchased a 1966 skylark and it makes a really loud clicking noise every time the axle turns over. the noise does not change and seems to be coming from the end on the transmission. any ideas?
ok so i took my skylark to two shops today and non of them could figure it out. midas claimed to not here it, even though it is realitvely loud. and they were also nice enough to tell me my front end and suspension are shot. i then took it to a freind of mine who owns a very reputable transmission shop (spath transmission) and he said he has never heard anything like it, and hasn't the slightest.
Then the thing to do is start with the cheapest thing and work your way up. U-joints can be done with a 5" vise and should only cost about $30.
i figured it out, kind of. it was my hubcaps. i am not sure how a essentially stationary object can make a clicking noise, but i removed my hubcaps to pack my bearings and i decided to take it for a spin with them removed. sure enough no noise. i put them back on and the noise is quiter but still there. if anyone can explain this anomoly i would appreciate it.
Are they dog-dish, or do they have emblems in them (not embossed). Maybe a clip holding it to the rim isn't quite catching.
I once had a chrome rally wheel that made creaking sounds going around corners. It turned out that that the holes for the lug nuts were worn so big that the lug nuts were bottoming out and not really holding down the wheel. That was a pity, the chrome on that wheel was perfect. ou: I'm glad you found the problem though! :TU:
My old 66 impala had a clicking noise i couldn't find. We went to atlanta for a 65-66 chevy meet and for fun the club ran around one of the local shorttracks jut too see who'd get on it. Well all the way back to wisconsin I heard a clicking noise. Come to find out that going around the banking actually cracked the rim between 3 of the rally wheel holes. Then a stockcer friend of mine claimes that chevy rallies are the worst on a circle track. Glad i made it back
