    Maybe helpful info to others

What cams have you guys stuffed in stock shortblocks?

    I've used a KB and TA113...poston 113a...poston 116....and a TA413

Gonna try a 107/118 here soon

Check piston to valve clearance with a 107 with stock un-notched pistons.

The stock pistons are cut a bit for the old kb 107 I’m running with a .038 gasket and zero deck.

I've used the Poston 113 cam in a stock '71 shortblock and currently run one in my '70 GS 455 Conv. with a stock '70 shortblock. It's always been one of my favorites.

My first aftermarket cam for my stock '67 430 was back in 1986 I think. Hydraulic Crower #52242:

    Engine Application 430 BUICK
    Grind Number 297-HDP

Advertised Duration: 297º Lift: .539" Clearance Hot: .000
Advertised Duration: 308º Lift: .536" Clearance Hot: .000

Timing Events at .050" tappet lift:
    INTAKE Opens: 10.0º BTDC
    Closes: 46.0º ABDC
    EXHAUST Opens: 57.0º BBDC
    Closes: 5.0º ATDC

    LOBE SEPARATION 112º

    Duration at .050": Intake: 236º
    Exhaust: 242º
    LOBE LIFT Intake: .337"
    Exhaust: .335"

No piston-to-valve issues, pistons were the usual 0.040" something in the hole like usual for BBB. Great low end and midrange, noticeable lope, good vacuum for brakes. Great w/my modded small dia variable pitch converter and butchered KB headers. Later swapped the cam into another stock 430 with manifolds, noticeably down on power/torque without headers.

Graduated to notched forged pistons and a hotter custom solid cam a couple years after that. Later upped to 462 cid. Stayed w/solid lifter grinds and notched pistons ever since.

Yea I'm gonna be CLOSE with the 107/118....using steel shims and had the deck cut a few tho....I'm pretty positive I'll be notching pistons

Yup, and duration's a bigger culprit than lift when it comes to valve clearance.

Running a Poston 116 in mine, Small stall convert, 3:23 rear. Runs strong.

    Bigpig455 Fastest of the slow....

I had this in a stock 72 motor, advanced a crapload to make cyl pressure. Ran great, put the car inthe 12's

If I'm not mistaken and remember exhaust valve is what gets close....with 266° it's gonna be a squeeze....my other option is a 242/250 545 545 on a 110....gonna try both

Correct, piston is chasing the open exhaust valve during the end of the exhaust stroke.

One of the bigger thumper cams that would still run with factory rockers. I sold the engine,so all of the info went with it. That cam,B4B,headers,and a good Holley went 11:90’s in a 3900lb car. Nothing crazy.

The mutha thumpa actually has good looking specs for a stock shortblock imo..I was tempted to order but I got free options here...107lsa..mild lift and a good split for the manifolds...Howard's has a similar grind...I think they would actually perform pretty well based of the numbers not sure what lobes they are tho

If you’re careful you can grind the notches pretty easy with a flare bit.
