I have this rare n34 option sport steering wheel for my Olds project and would like to dye or paint it black. I need some advice on what product would work best, and would this be a semi or flat black? I have a photo of mine and what I'd like it to look like. Thanks.
I would think a vinyl spray paint/dye would work: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/...CAKz0P8Q_WsXDmWGcrPZgwXrJYmjtZUxoCG0IQAvD_BwE or: https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p...earchTerm=Duplicolor+Vinyl+and+Fabric+Coating or: https://www.eastwood.com/sem-classi...Mu9VUHNnMQbKNP8plmd40OGb-rEy7ppxoC_-8QAvD_BwE Note - I have not done this yet. I personally would go with the SEM. The most important thing is to clean it well. Prep is 90% of painting!
I have used the Duplicolor spray dye (Gloss Black AND Semi-gloss black) on the interior components of a 2000 FORD Crown Victoria with good success. Also used the blue on touch up on a 1987 BUICK Regal cloth seat back, where the top of the seats had faded from sun exposure , also with good results. The biggest thing that you MUST do is THOROUGHLY clean EVERY trace of skin-oil, protectants, dirt and grease from the surface of any vinyl. You can't clean it enough, SCRUB with Purple Stuff, Greased Lightning, Simple Green INDUSTRIAL cleaner, and DAWN dishwashing lotion. Use a coarse nylon brush, followed with a firm tooth-brush. YOU CAN"T CLEAN IT ENOUGH!!! Then use a paint adhesion promoter, following directions TO THE LETTER!!! Then use the paint. Use VERY light coats as heavy coats will fill in the grain more than multiple light coats. I also recommend using a satin clear-coat over the color coat. HOWEVER, even ANY non-original color coat will STILL not be 100% correct, and WILL fade and wear with use... In the long run, you MAY just need to search for a CORRECT color wheel...Yeah, I know that isn't what you want to hear, especially for a RARE part...
