steering feels "lumpy"

OK, my '66 Lesabre with power steering & power drum brakes feels lumpy. Its been this way for a while but is getting worse. At low speeds and with the engine cold its almost like no power assist. Once warmed and at speed its much better but you can still feel "lumpyness" and at times it feels like the motor is kicking back through the steering if you see what I mean. (You know how it feels when you brake hard in a disk brake car with warped rotors, thats how it feels, but when you are driving a long, not braking)

All the mechanical bits of the steering have been checked over for its safety inspection and passed as OK (has had a bunch of new bushes and a reconditioned centerlink). Belt on the PAS pump feels pretty tight (but not too tight).

    No noise accompanies this fault.

I've never changed the fluid in the pump, might try that. I've never touched the steering box since I had the car either. Anything I should look at there?

Sounds like a slipping belt.......it doesn't necessarily have to make a squeel if it's slipping. Go with a new belt and see if it makes a difference. Also, try running synthetic tranny fluid in your power steering after flushing it out real well. By that I mean have the front end up on stands and turn the wheels fully in both directions while flushing it until it runs out perfectly clean from the return hose.. You'll be pleased with the results.....I could hear and feel the difference in mine when I did that. :bglasses:
