I am looking for two of the plastic push in fasteners that hold the steering column cover in place. I have tried the usual suspects, Autozone, Napa, Lowes, etc. with no success. OPGI has the fasteners, but only with the purchase of a $29.98 cover, which i don't need. Anybody got a source, or did you just run a nut and bolt through for repair?
Are tyou talking about the cover that attaches to the firewall at the base of the column? Or the decorative cover that goes under the column up top by the dash? I realize they're different, but on the 70-72' that lower plastic trim gets held in place with 2 sheetmetal screws.
Thats exactly what they are....push in long plastic ribbed pins. Funny, I need two as well and seen them in a NPD (National Parts Depot) catologe for 64 Chevelle
On a 66 there is only a plastic piece that fits against the firewall, held in by two really big push in fasteners.
Bet you could find something that will work at an auto body supply. They usually have a big board with samples. You may have to buy a box of them though.
Well, OPGI won't sell them seperately because they get them in a kit from the supplier. So, I will try to find an auto body shop supplier to see how that works out. You can be damn sure if I find them I'm buying a bunch if for no other reason than to pass to others with unloved 66/67's.
I think both Fusick + Ames carry those retainers, maybe Groundup restorations also. I bought a couple...forgot where!
I tracked some of these down for 'ya! Inline Tube has them in the Olds catalog. I'm pretty sure they are the same retainers used for the firewall pad, they have those listed 8 @ 8.00. Take a look online.
They should work, I see them now in Ames catalog, also. They are sold individually there. The retainers have to go though the column cover AND the firewall pad, so you have to push them in there well for them to hold. They sell a tool to put them in, but you shouldn't need it.
Well, thanks to the tip from MROLDS69, I bought a bag of eight of them from inline tube for $8.00, and from looking at them they are almost perfect! They are all ribbed on the shank, where the originals were only ribbed about halfway, but the concours judges will never notice. I now have eight, need two, and will keep two for backup. The other four are free to whomever can use them, and I mean use them not just want to hoard them. Free includes shipping! I'm a believer in "passing it forward".
Good deal, glad they worked for you! Definitely keep a couple spares 'cuz if you pull the cover off again they might break.
