    Now that I am starting to put things back on, I have a question regarding the steering box. My steering box number does not match the manual. My car is an early 1971 model so maybe it has a left over 1970. The number on the aluminum cover is 7812145, the body number (on the cast) is 5691576.

    Any help?

    The part number on the cover is the number for that part...not the assembly.

    Matt;

    I realize that there are two numbers on the unit; however, the cover and/or unit number does not match the 1971 manual. Can the number on the cover be verified by a different year/manual?

    Len,
    There is a number stamped into a raised rectangular part of the cover plate. It will read something like this
    123 2
    List what the number is.

    Duane;

    The number is 107 1 (I thought it was 1971, the 0 was double stamped).

    That would be sometime in April of 1971, so it would be for a late 1971 car, like my GSX.

    Duane;

    That is about right. I keep forgetting that they started making the cars in 1970; mine was Feb. 1971.
