I have but I've never put one back. Your starter has to have the long through bolt with a stud sticking out to use it. As I understand it, it was strictly for assembly line purposes.

  2. Well that answers that. Lol

A photo from where, I don't know. Saved it for just such an occasion, I guess.

I think the purpose of that picture was to show you the L bracket that nobody re installs. Yeah, that's a crusty starter.:)

Chevy w/153-tooth ring gear, and Buick share the same starter nose. Chevy doesn't use a threaded hole in the case by the field coils for it's brace. Given that all these old starters have been rebuilt a few times by now, there's no telling what you're gonna get until you open the box.

  7. Yes sir I understand that. Lol. So no L bracket . Check !

  8. I have an AC Delco starter on the way. I'll back the timing up before starting it. As well as new battery and clean connections. I'll inspect the flywheel again to make sure the teeth are all still there. Hoping for the best. Thanks again guys. I'll keep you posted

You can also use the starter from the mid 90s lt1 out of a road master or f body. Ta sells a version of this but I believe inside has metal gears not plastic

I have the PG 260 mini starter I had to replace the solenoid, and came across the plastic parts TA refers to.

A good friend had this issue a while ago. He was using the bolts that came with the replacement starters. He backed off the timing but still broke 3 starters within a month. Upon further investigation I found that the serations by the threads on the bolts were not correct (were not added far enough down the shank of the bolt). I used old original GM starter bolts that had more serations on them. Two years later all remains well.

The factory didn't put the little l bracket there for nothing...
