I've owned my '65 special wagon(300/2speed) for fifteen years and it's time I started the turboglide to 4speed conversion. I bought the car from the original-owner,little old widow that never learned how to drive, hubby had put about 90k on it then stuffed it back in the garage. I'm afraid I've been more abusive to it than they ever were. I just took it off active insurance so I can start it's recovery without being tempted to drive it. so far I have, or have on the way; pedals off of ebay, 85.00 shipped buick only no inspection cover bellhousing #? 115.00 " z-bar (skylark) 75.00 " saginaw wide ratio/with linkage 100.00 " If anybody here has any of the other stuff, give me a call,I do hi-end audio and electronics for a living so give me a ring if you need parts or advice(old car friendly) Ben, 253.332.4153
Cool. I'm interested in the bellhousing - purely technical interest! :beer can you post a picture of it? :TU:
Get the part number off of it as a 300 bell housing is different than the one used for 400, 430, 455 applications.
I do not think hes selling them parts he is looking for more to complete his swap.I did a similar swap in a 65 Lark so if I can help tech wise just ask me.......Bruce.
Sorry ...I guess I made that confusing. That is a list of the stuff I have purchased so far, with the prices - just for info's sake. Nothing for sale.
I'm sorry I came across like I wanted to buy. I am excited to see another Special Wagon here on the board and just wanted to say Cool Project and Welcome! Ted:beers2:
Ted, I'll try to upload the pic from ebay, I haven't seen it in person yet. It looks like the motor side is basically round, without any cutout at the bottom. probably will need some kind of sheetmetal cover so you cant see the flywheel from the front. the fork sticks out the side, almost level with the ground. and one starter bump on the passenger side
your bellhousing does indeed use an inspection cover. it's a flat piece and should look like this one.
That makes sense...but I didn't know any other way to say it didn't have the big half circle cutout at the bottom.
I'm having difficulty finding a used 300 flywheel; and have heard concerns about weather a 350 flywheel is balanced the same as a 300. Does anybody here have actual experience using a 350 f.w. on a 300 and does it work? I don't mind coming out of pocket for a new one if it will work.
Try calling Carmen Faso in NY- 716-693-4090 He may have something for the 300. The automatic flex plates fothe 300 and 350 are really close in appearence. Ted
I went with a 350 flywheel behind my 300. It works well, with no noticible vibration. The pics I've seen of the 300 flywheel show holes drilled in the outer circumference. I believe these were for the insertion of weights to fine balance the assembly.
Thanks to the people that pm'd me about flywheel sources, the sources were knowledgable but nobody had one ...but... I talked to a guy last week that said he had one, I finally got back ahold of him and he did find it, there was another guy wanting it but I was in line first..either way I paid for it but haven't got to lay eyes on it yet...I did get my bellhousing and z-bar, somebody please tell me that a z-bar for a 300 in a 65 special should have the # 44557 stamped on the side??? Thanks Ben p.s. My factory shop manual for the 65 shows this wierd bar with balls on either end with levers that fit over the balls
Post a pic of your Z bar.Mine is in the car and is hard to see any numbers but the z bar I used in my 4 speed skylark with the 300 is out of a 65 special 3 speed stick column shift and it worked perfectly.I can post a fair picture of it in the car if you wish, just let me know.........Bruce.
That sure looks like what you need.Do you have the stud that goes in it for adjusting it and such?I had to make one using a partially threaded bolt but it worked out well........
this the diagram from my '65 factory service manual. I think it is just a different version of the same part
