OK looks like we have some interest with about 12 expressing interest in purchasing these knobs. I have just heard back from the ROLEX watch technician, who will be reproducing these knobs, and will try to answer all of your good questions you have raised. The knobs will be cut from brass stock, which is a great material for chrome plating, the top will have the exact same dome & bevel around the outer edge. Some of you have asked about how the flange at the bottom of the knurling will be reproduced, and he guarantees he can reproduce it and will look the same as the originals. He 's keeping that process to himself for now, I think that's fair enough. The underside flange that sits on the A C will have the correct threads for the hold down bolt (not supplied). Some have asked if my estimate included chrome plating and it did not and could you see a prototype. If you have more Q's I will try to answer them. I'm considering having a prototype made for all to see . That involves the time to produce a CAD model , set up time for the machine and machining time for the 1st one to make any adjustments required to make the knob exact. All future knobs cut will involve machine time for each knob. Once I have one made, I will then get an estimate for chrome plating so I can offer them as a finished knob ready to use. Before proceeding with a prototype I need 20 SERIOUSLY interested purchasers. This will then enable me to up front the project money & confirm costs based on 20 knobs, to machine and chrome each knob. All that would be added will be the cost of shipping to you. The more orders the less the cost for each knob. Once we have a confirmed cost I will take orders and ask for 50% up front and the rest upon shipping. Lets see where this goes and see if we can make some quality knobs for those Star Wars A C's. Thanks for your interest Bob
I would eventually purchase one if they are available, but as of now the car priorities lie elsewhere.
Hey Bob, Put me down for 1 too I wanna help you get this project going. Check out my lastest find. 1970 GS 455 Rag. Ive been following this car since the early 80's. Marcel
Brass is the ideal material if the part is to be chrome or nickel plated. Steel parts are copper or brass-plated before the bright layer is plated on. On the Model T, the bright (Nickle) plated radiator shells were made of brass to save the brass plating step in manufacture. If you find a T with a Nickel plated shell and a magnet will stick to it, it ain't original!
Re: Star wars air cleaner knobs Prototype Ready After the loss of my Mother early this year and some other illness in my family i have found some time to work on this project again. My apologies for not keeping the board updated . But i have good news. I have produced one prototype in brass and had it double chrome plated for the final finished appearance.I am presently exploring the final production options to determine the best method and least expensive for the finished product .Once that is done i will be able to determine the cost of each unit.At present i have approx 30 members that have indicated they would purchase the units. These will be available chrome plated ready to install. The more orders i receive the more i can have produced, and the less expensive they will cost.I believe the Star Wars air Cleaners were only used on the 67 GS400 & the Riviera ,of which these knobs were used. So help me out the get the word out and see how many we will need to manufacture. Soon as i finalize the costs i will post the information. Can someone advise me on the way to post a photo of the prototype knob? I have tried unsuccessfully!
