I recently purchased a stage 2 scoop from TA. I’ve looked around here in the forums for some inspiration or Installation ideas on air cleaners and ways to seal the carb to bring in fresh air to the carb. Some of the old posts seem to have missing links or give me a message of error and unfortunately I need visual aids as I get older anymore LOL. Would anybody care to share pictures of there scoops How there mounted and there air cleaner/fresh air set ups? Any other input or advise would be appreciated as well. The install will be on a 68 skylark with carb sitting on an SPX with a 2 inch spacer. I thought about using a fiberglass hood but believe I will just use the steel hood.

For my 69 I put a piece of aluminum (circle) on top of the air cleaner? I had tabs on the sides that raises/lower the circle. You may have to play with it to get it right. I glued a 2” square foam on the circle, when the hood is closed it seals to the hood. I cut the air cleaner lid down to the same diameter of the air filter. You can get a tall air filter to raise it closer to the top of the hood.

This is my Stage 2 setup, on a 70 Skylark 455 Offenhauser 360 intake 1" spacer and a Demon 850 carb.
This is for the track, I use a 5" tall K&N aircleaner/filter on the street.

So how big of a circle was cut out of hood? Looks like from the pics above you stayed in the recessed portion of the hood not getting into any of the bracing.. I was thinking of a 15 inch circle the center being from the carb air cleaner stud. Figured that would allow a 14inch air cleaner plenty of room.

Soldier what part number is that filter you have? It looks like it would be effective and not to restrictive. I did find your post.

Jim does your foam ring seal up tight against those indentations and recesses of the hood? I want to keep all fresh air into the carb so I want a pretty tight seal.

So a question I have to all is with those indentations in the hood or the hood bracing near the cut out, looks like it would be hard to get a tight seal since it isn’t flat. Does the foam conform to those bends and seal it up well?

Here are a few pics, When I cut my hood I took a sharpie apart and put to on the carb stud, put masking tape on the underside of the hood. When closed the sharpie will make a mark on the tape? Drilled 1/8” hole in dot. Took hood off trace circle and cut. The first pic shows the foam conforming to hood underside.

Seals good, measure 5,6 times, cut once! New setup, haven't had a chance to test it at the track...JIM

My hood was off, so I tied a string to the ceiling collar ties, centered a plumb bob on the carb stud. Placed hood on , marked center , pulled hood off , cut out circle. Just 2 ways to git to the same place.... Jim

Remember , torquey big blocks move when ya squash the loud pedal, provide aircleaner with some wiggle room ! JIM

    Exactly!

Before I redid mine I had a 14” round air cleaner that was hitting the hood when the engine torqued.

I made the hole larger and went with the airaid filter that’s 14” at the base and @11” up top.

That gave the clearance needed and topped it with the kn xtreme 11” lid.

And yes, my foam contours to the hood. I checked it with a scope. Good to go.

Well we have a hole. Went 15” that will allow plenty for a good air cleaner and plenty of air for sure. Now on to the air pan set up. I get the paint Monday for the scoop and I’m gonna modify the hood molding so, it will go back on. So far it’s going good. It was intimidating to make that first cut into the hood. Thanks for everyone’s input.. I’ll post some pics....

    15” is good.

I also used this around the hole opening. Gave it a clean look.
