    Trying to clear a few things up about stage 1 carb numbers.

    Some sources i look at show 72 stage 1 4 speed carb should be 7042942
    well other sites show 7042242 are stage 1 Auto and manual carb

    What i'm wondering is what is the correct number for a 72 stage 1 4 speed.

    and i also have a 72 stage 1 4 speed that was sold new in canada and is suppose to be untouched with a carb number of 7042243 which i believe is a 455 4 speed carb.
    My books show there was less 455 4 speeds made then stage 1 4 speeds in 72 so Im wondering if there may have been a mix up from factory or if that is the correct carb on that engine?

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks,

    Dan

    7042942 = cal 72 stage 1 carb

    7042242 = 72 stage 1 carb except cal

    7042243 = 72 manual trans non stage gs 455 carb

    Maybe some others have an explanation. I would say either it was changed to the incorrect carb sometime in its life or the factory used the incorrect carb.

    Just as our esteemed counselor advises, either someone changed it during the past 40 years or the factory goofed and placed the wrong carb on the engine. They weren't building showcars back then.

    Get the date code off the carb...that will be a big clue as to it being a factory goof or a replacement carb.

    He did. It seems consistent with the car and suggests of a factory mistake.

    Yes, I would concur with you Jim. Factory mistake.

    My bad on missing the date code. Thanks for correcting my mistake.

    We both were on the same trail in an attempt to resolve the mystery.:Smarty:

    So do you think this would hurt the value at all?

    It is hard to say. A restored stage 1 carb sold separately may fetch $1-2K. A prospective buyer that views the car as incorrect without the 242 carb may feel he has to pay out an additional $1-2K to make it correct whereas some buyers may not care. :Do No:

    I have the same carb on a 72 GS Stage1 4 speed car, V code mostly untuched car.

    trim tag

    Body year= ST 72
    Time build code=11B
    Carb # 7042243 MD 2721
    Dist # 1112016
    Block WS

    Not very good at decode but looks if I am correct
    Build date= 2nd week of Nov 71
    Carb date= 31 Aug 71

    Based on that mine may also be a factory error if I have decoded correctly thanks Bill.

    He Did say it was sold new in - which means Canadian emission standards - code
    <table class="main" border="0" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" width="95%"><tbody><tr><td>Z49</td><td>
    </td><td>1 Mandatory Canadian Base Equipment Modifications</td></tr></tbody></table> which could explain the different carb number (not sure what it included, just a could be).
    there other codes that only show on candian sold cars, when you get the GM Canada documentation, some are kind of strange until you think about it.
    like - why extra fuel for Canadian delivery - they by truck train didn't drive them over --or did they .....??????
    <table class="main" border="0" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" width="95%"><tbody><tr><td>W84</td><td>
    </td><td>1 Additional Fuel For Delivery</td></tr></tbody></table>

    Canadian Base Equipment Modifications often included a stronger antifreeze mix for lower temperatures.
