solution for A-body rear pillar cracks?

    Hi folks,

What is the solution to fix those cracks that form on almost all A-body convertibles between the upper part of the truck lid extending forward to the cloth top? Seems to be worse on the right side, due to torque. I've seen some guys cut channels there, but cracks just form in the channels. Strangely, some A-bodys never get these, but most do.

    Is there a permanent solution?

I've heard that lead will do the trick. I believe these were leaded from the factory. I see a lot of guys just fill the seams with body filler....guaranteed cracks!

    Adam,

I thought that lead was the trick, as well. I either was wrong, or my body shop didn't know what they were doing.

They put the lead in, and it bubbled up the paint within a year. Ended up having to grind all of the lead out of there. I think they next tried fiberglass, which lasted a couple of years. I used to just have that area redone either 2 years, but there has to be some better answer.

Almost all of the GM convertbles seem to crack there. One of the few cars that didn't is my 70 442 conv, and it did have lead in the joint from the factory.

I had to have a quarter installed due to a rust issue behind the rear wheel, so instead of taking a chance of having the crack develop, I welded the seam shut between the rear qtr and the filler panel. The only way that crack will come back is if the panels come part.

We plan on doing the same thing to the 70 Chevelle conv we are putting quarters on.
