Single plane Buick 340 or Leyland P76 intake?

I received a Wildcat single plane intake manifold in exchange for some
consulting work on a Rover engine. The intake was supposed to fit a
Rover block and I assumed it would be similar to the Willpower I have.
It is not. While it looks similar, it is taller than my Willpower and
a fair bit wider than the Buick 300 aluminum intake I have and the ports
are larger. It has the port spacing of a Rover V8 and Buick215/300/340.
Does anyone have access to a Buick 340 intake they could measure for me?
As a start I'd like the port height and width and the distance between
the left and right side bolt holes. I'm trying to identify what this
is before I offer it up for sale. I'm told the cast iron 66-67 Buick
340 V8 4bbl intake is similar in width to the Australian P76 intake with
the P76 intake slightly narrower. I'm wondering if this intake fits
one or both of those two engines. It's a shame it doesn't fit the Rover
as it looks to be a really nice intake. I've included a couple of photos
which show the width difference compared to a Buick 300 4 barrel intake.

i'd be interested in it when it goes up for sale. i have been looking online for a single plane option to modify for a 300 and a 340. Bob

I don't think that single plane fits a Buick engine (unless it is for the nail head). It sure would offer a lot of ventilation out of the top of the valley though...   :3gears:

    > Here is the info for the bolt distances:

Measuring a few intakes that were handy across the front 2 bolt holes (inside to outside):
Buick 215 (Edelbrock Performer Rover dual plane) 8 7/8"
    Buick 300 dual plane 9 3/8"
    Willpower single plane 10 1/4"

Jim Blackwood measured a 340 @ 10 3/8", so the Wildcat should be a good fit
on that block. It would need a slight milling or perhaps thin gaskets to fit
a Leyland P76. The lips are 5/8" think on each side so it might mill down to
fit a Buick 300 block, though you'd probably have to slot the bolt holes.

    > I don't think that single plane fits a Buick engine

The Buick 215 uses the manifold gasket to seal the valley. For other blocks,
you'd want to make a valley cover.

    > (unless it is for the nail head).

It's definately not for a nail head. I've got a complete 322 Buick and a couple
of intakes (a second 322 4 barrel and a 364 tri-power) to sell, along with several
Buick V6 intakes (Buick 4.1L, Weiand and Kenne Bell).

    > P76 manifold valley width is 8 1/4"
    > Buick 300 valley is 7 1/2"
    > Rover V8 valley is 7"

I get the same measurements. The Wildcat intake measures 8 1/4".

If the dimensions above work for you, the port size is 0.95" wide by 1.925" tall.

    Thanks!

  7. Dan, i will send you a pm tomorrow regarding the intake. Bob

Sorry for the delay in responding. I lost my 'net connection yesterday. Seems to be working again.

    It's for a P76 Dan.

Pic 2: Stock 340 intake next to Australian Wilpower P76 intake with no adapter plates. Pretty close but needs help.

But, you say the port sizes are larger than the Rover? Is that right?

those port dimensions are very close to the stock measurements i get on my 65 300 intake. please send me a pm with your asking price. Bob

Yes, the ports are a little larger than a Buick 300 aluminum head.
I was simply going to weld the port floor (or roof) slightly to port
match until I realized it was the wrong width.

Well, that's news. Could it be Wildcat (or Wilpower) is making intakes to match their big valve heads? You got a pic of the ports?

Perhaps it was cast to fit Wildcat heads on a P76 block. I'll post pictures of the ports tomorrow.

Greg, why do you need spacers on the P76 intake? Are you not using a P76 block?

Is that a Rover Willpower with spacers so it fits a P76 block or ?

The intake I have is a Wilpower for a P76. You don't need spacers to fit a P76 intake to a P76 block, but, you DO need spacers to fit a P76 intake to a Buick 340 block (which is what I was demonstrating). You also need spacers to fit a Buick 300 intake to a P76 block. Anyway, if Wilpower casts P76 intakes for Wildcat heads, then, it's a short jump to using TA Buick\Rover heads on a 340 block with a good single plane.

Here's a shot of the Wildcat ports.

    I see now.

I think somebody on this board had contacted Willpower about a year ago about casting a P76 intake to fit a 340 and the response was favorable, since it only meant a bit thicker mounting flange. If anyone is willing to plunk down the cash for the TA heads I'd think they would want to go that route rather than mess with spacers. Add the Sanderson headers and you have the full package.

Well, Jim there's more to it than making the mounting flange thicker. The ports have to be enlarged by a good bit. Porting the current size won't work without some major welding. Pic is a stock P76 single plane intake port compared to a stock Buick 340 port. WAY bigger. If Wilpower is casting the ports larger now, bonus....

Anyway, you gents made me go out to the garage, dig through my stash with an el cheapo plastic ruler and get some off the cuff measurements. The are as follows:

    Stock 65 Buick 300 intake port - 2" X 1 1/16"
    Stock P76 intake port - 1 11/16" X 1"
    Ported P76 intake port - 1 13/16" X 1 1 1/16"
    Stock 64 Buick 300 intake port - 1 3/4" X 1 1/32"

    Very off the cuff.

You're right Greg, that was the part I'd forgotten. I don't remember if they'd discussed enlarging the runners or not. Maybe once the TA heads are available they would consider it? That package would sit very nicely atop a 350 block.
