You are 100% correct...Too bad more people didn't have the insight as well.

    Brett,
I agree but at to what end, If this pissed me off... what do you think the owner feels about this? Put youself in their shoes. A very nice car that is as close to being untouched as you will find..it gets ripped apart. I was at Yardleys party and whan Jim Ramseys untouched original 70 Stage 1 car came in the yard it was shared with enthusiasm not Jackasses picking it apart.Everyone including Duane H enjoyed the originality of this car. Every number you could find... matched up. I am so tired of the conduct of people on here its no wonder I am really considering going Chevy. I can at least buy decent performance parts and almost all body parts reasonably. I might even buy that 454 now and install it in my car just to give the whiners something to complain about..

    Pat,

No matter what we involve ourselves in there's always going to be negativity...add a public internet bulletin board to the mix and that negativity has the propensity of multiplying many times over....

Should people sit here and pick apart a rare 36 year old car that's in original, "survivor" condition, as well as a seller's choice to list it on an online auction-and the price? I would like to think not. Are there people that are going to? Sure. That's been made evident in this and other threads in this forum and throughout the board.

What can you do about it? I don't see how getting upset makes anything better...in fact, the majority of hard core Buick nuts on this board know what this rare car is all about. If people who want to make public, negative comments, they should realize they:

    1) are going to cause a stir and should expect some feeback

    2) might end up looking like a clown in front of an entire internet community.

There's a board member on here who has this quote in his signature:

(not sure if this is exactly how it's worded but I think you get the picture)

better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're a fool, instead of opening it and removing all doubt....

    That quote speaks volumes.... :Comp:

    Market value

My point is this, every big dollar GS GSX that has come up on e-bay did not sell. This auction is a good example of how I believe people find out the reserve by talking to the owner and for what ever reason they bid the car up to the reserve.I have not said at anytime that Dan rigged anything,as a matter of fact I think Dan is calling there bluff by lowering the reserve to with in a $1.00 of the highest bid.Market value is not determined by advertised price but by the money that changes hands. You can ask for the moon ,it doesn't mean you will get it.At the end of the day if he get's what he wants in his pocket who cares.I don't think anyone is bashing the car or Dan but only questioning the motive of the bidders.Tomorrow we will find out if the bidders are playing games or not. There seems to be this big push to drive the prices up on these cars,I think if a guy is that worried about the money part of this it's time to get out and get into the stock market.Pat something else about this board,it seems only certain people are aloud to have an opinion :Do No: Whats with the name calling, relax man there all opinions :Do No: Chris

The fact that the car went that high in my opinion does determine market price to some extent. For example, on the recent GSX auction, the way I see it, someone was willing to pay 165,000 for that car. Even though the owner thought it was worth more, doesnt that high bid account for something? That number isnt that outrageous. Everyone knows of a certain private GSX sale that was over 6 figures. I think the same applies here if you assume the bidding is for real ( which I stated earlier I do) ...someone is willing to pay 71,000 for this car. Do you think this auction will influence the price I ask for my car even if its a non-sale? Your damn right!

    Market value

It's funny, just to prove my point to another board member 3 weeks I found out the reserve on 2 cars that were on e-bay,both owners were very willing to give it to me.I bid on both cars, and I pushed both up to the reserve 1 car sold the other did not.The fact that I pushed it up to the reserve does not mean the car was worth that.People do this alot more then you think.I've seen many board members helping out fellow board members this way.Tomorrow we will find out if these guy's are just trying to help a fellow buick guy or if there real players. At $71,000 I can't see a $1.00 killing the deal if its real or not.Don't confuse helpful buick guys with market value.I also think the $165,000 GSX was pushed also. This type of deals means nothing to market values.Chris

Sorry Guys, I ended the listing. I just realized after looking at the marketplace that I'd never be able to duplicate what I have. I guess I've just owned the car too long. I was talking to the original owner yesterday on the phone, and he reminded me how badly I wanted the car when I bought it from him in 1976. I'm going to get the air conditioning recharged and the few little other items done that I mentioned in the listing, and enjoy driving it! In May, 1970, the Challenger T/A was my first choice if I had had the money, and the Stage One was my second. After looking at the Challenger T/A's available, I realize I was wrong. Stage One's rule. So now, I'm back looking for a set of iron stage 2 heads to complete my factory stage 2 stuff that will never get installed, but be in my trunk for display.

    Money talks BS walks

Auction has end with no sale, you could read this like a book.Dan stepped up to the plate here by dropping the reserve,$1.00 did not kill the deal hell I would of sent either one of the bidders the $1.00 just to see it sell for that.I'm sure they could have dug that up out of there ash tray or found more than that under the back seat of the stage car when they got it home.
I don't know why people do this pushing up,ego,to try and push the prices up,or maybe just to help sell the car.If it works great but if not its just a big let down. Now there will probably be a deal behind closed doors and we will never know the true selling price (value) of the car.......Chris

    Chris--

If it helps you at all in establishing values, I was offered $69,000 for the car from someone who looked like a real buyer. Obviously, that didn't work for me.

Dan, I think you did the right thing. You will never be able to replace a car like that. There are only a handful (if that) of cars that are in the original condition yours is in. Keep it and enjoy it

I have to agree that the 2 bidders new what the reserve was and bid to that point only to stir the pot. If they had any intentions of buying the car $1 certainly wouldn't have made a difference. Dan probably didn't know this would happen and sounds like he was only listing the car to see if he could get what he thought it was worth. As it turns out he didn't, but sounds like he's happy anyway. I'm sure this is not the 1st time this has happened on Ebay and won't be the last. The GS is a great car with awesome perfomance and limited numbers, these 2 factors will drive up the prices eventually. I just hate to see a couple of over zealous Buick fans drive up the price artifically.Sooner or later they will catch up to the top of the line Chevelles, Camaros and GTOs. I wonder what would have happened if Dan said the reserve was actually higher then what it was set at, and, one of these guys met the reserve thinking it was higher. Think they would have paid?????? or would they let their rep be ruined on Ebay. If you guys are watching you are playing a dangerous game. It could happen and you might find youself being sued--- it is a contract when your bidding. Just my 2 cents. SPB

  16. $$ hoax

I'm with buicksstage1. This wds455gs guy bids on any Buick that remotely appears on e-bay! Haven't seen him buy one yet?? I think he owns a few and would like everyone to think they are bringing tons of money.

If I had a bunch of money. And really liked a car, what the hell is the difference between 71k and 75k. Pecentage wise, that's like stopping at 11k when the buyer wants 11,500. You just don't miss the car for a couple more dollars. :Do No: :Do No:

Also, the auction runs for a week or so. Then with one hour to go the seller decides to keep the car???? This way no REAL money changes hands and everyone assumed the car would have sold. Wow now its worth 70k.
Even though no-one had the KAHUNAS to push the "buy it now".

GOOD THING the reserve wasn't 250k then it would have stopped at 249k
That would have REALLY driven the price up on these cars.

Remember everyone in America has their own opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!! :TU:

    peaceout,

I hope your right. I started "doing a few things" about 9 years ago. I still haven't finished with those few things but there have been a couple of changes. First off I don't enjoy it one bit. Second I can hardly wait to get rid of it. Too much wrenching, trying to make it better, perfect, whatever, has helped make me the bitter man I am today. The only cars I like anymore are the ones that I don't own. Good luck.

    just curious

Hey were firestone Wide Ovals original for a 1970? I want to add some original retro looking tires to mine and I always thought the (G60/15) Polyglas GT Goodyears were the ticket.

Regardless the car is a real survivor, and he says it has the original rubber on it. How cool is that?

I don't think the Firestones came on the 70 cars but I'm not sure. I do know that I had a set on my 77 Z28 when new. The steel belts slipped and the car wobbled terribly. Eventually Firestone recalled all of them and lost their reputation. Weren't they sold to a Japanese company (Bridgestone) soon thereafter? I seem to remember that they also eventually closed their main plant in the mdwest. Sorry to change the subject, but I'll never put Firestones on a car again, even if they're available or original.

The Firestone's on my car are the original tires that came from the factory if no tire upgrade was ordered. So at least in December, 1969, Buick was using 14" Firestone white letter wide ovals on at least Stage One cars, and probably all GS cars. I believe I told Marco I'd get the tire date codes for him, and I'd better get busy doing that one of these days.
