My father and I just bought this 1970 GS as a project car. After looking closer at the cowl tag, The lower paint code is 14 and upper code is 19. We thought this was a black vinyl top (B code) car. Has anyone else have or seen a black painted top 1970-72 hardtop?

I haven't seen a car in that combination. However, I had a '72 Skylark what was brown on the botton and yellow on top. I don't remember the colr names or codes for '72.

I think silver with a black top is a good looking alternative to a vinyl top. Espcially if your car has the upper body side molding option.

a friend & co-worker of mine in london, ontario, in 1970 purchased a new skylark custom 2 dr ht - silver with a black vinyl roof & black bench seat interior. i liked the colour combo. it was 350v8 2bbl and he drove the crap out of that car.

I have a 70 Skylark parts car that is Sherwood green with a white painted roof.
Also, a 69 GTO that is painted Midnight green with a Verdoro green painted roof.

I worked at a couple of Chevrolet dealerships in the early '70s, right out of high school. I've seen all kinds of color combinations. Yours is not that unusual.

    My first '71-back in '83.
Wife's grandmother bought it new, I ended up with the car @ 22k miles.
Originally Bamboo Creme lower, not sure on the top colour. Never did look at the cowl tag.

Chris - V8SKY- If I still had the car I'd give you those mudflaps!

    Hi

Attached Photos of my all original 71GS350 with 4speed with no air or power brakes with a black painted top. The photo was taken in 2000 but I bought it in 1985. I also included a photo of my restored firewall with the marking for the color of the car and top. BTW I know the markings I placed on the firewall looks to good to be true but that is the way it came out. I also included the original photo of firewall markings.

i also had a nex door neighbour who purchased, new, a 1967 pontiac beaumont 2dr ht. the car was factory white. he had a local bodyshop paint the roof a near flat black. the piant was deliberatly orange peeled. believe it or not, it looked like vinyl roof from a few feet away.

I had a 67 Impala like that. But the Imp had two glued on "seams" running the length of the top.

Henry White's 70 Sherwood green GS has a black painted top.

  14. I haven't seen one. Good luck with the project.

The option code is D99 Two Tone Paint. I don't believe there is any breakdown by color only total number for all color combinations.
    For 1970 GS the numbers are 455s = 177 and 350s = 425 .
    1971 GS = 214
    1972 GS = 124

That was common in the Sixty's. I remember a bunch of cars in Brooklyn NY as a kid having this done because the owners liked those "new-fangled" vinyl tops!!! Ron

two tone paint back then meant, yes roof one colour & body another. however, both paints would be regular body paint, not a "textured" paint on the roof. yes or no?
