Should I get a new Edelbrock Carb for my 340?

I currently have a 67 Skylark with a stock 340-4. I am planning to install a 2004R tranny soon and will be removing the carb to put in some mods for the TV cable. Since I will have the carb off I thought about replacing it with a new Edelbrock. As I understand, the Edelbrocks are a newer design and many people recommend them. I read the recent thread about the compliments people gave the Carter/Edelbrock design and function. The car currently has the original Carter on it that I had rebuilt a couple years ago.

What is the opinion from the group? Will the 600 cfm version work fine? Electric Choke or Manual? :Do No:

As a side note, my Carter originally had the smog stuff hooked to it and the car runs terrible when the pump is running (it backfires, diesels, etc). This will be a daily driver and reliability is required. I would also like to enjoy the throttle response many of you have enjoyed with a newer Carter/Edelbrock.

    Thanks!

I have an Edelbrock Performer 600 electric choke on my 340. Also have the 200-4R transmission.

The carb is great. No problems at all. But, I don't race the car, so I can't argue with the race boys about it being the fastest carb.

I had to fabricate some of the carb linkages and use a 1" spacer to raise it higher. Also, the stock air cleaner won't fit, so you get to buy a nice chrome one. You can expect to do some minor work to link the carb, but it's well worth it.
