Short Console Question

I have a 1970 GS Stage1 4 speed car that came with the consolette and short non shift console (sloan documented). I was told the non shift console isn't correct. The lid has a tri shield emblem and you lift up on a chrome plate to open the lid. I was told the correct one has a push button to open the lid. This car was built the 3rd week of Sept if that would make a difference.
Thanks for any help with this, Kraig

Whoever told you that knew a little of the story but not the whole story. The one you have is 70 Type 1 which was in use from 65 - 70. During the 70 model year Buick changed over to 70 Type 2 with the push button and it was used for some time thereafter. In 72 the so called mini console was introduced which sat on the hump and had an accordian door. I suspect the person that gave you the bad info had seen a push button type in a 70 model Buick and just assumed that they all had push buttons during the 70 model year.

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

There seems to be quite a bit of interest in these shorty consoles. They are also found in Rivs. Here is a pic of one.

I do know they changed from the emblem to the pushbutton somewhere around 70,Mine is a original in my 65 and has the emblem and is identical to the one in the photo.

The exact change over date to the best of my belief is unknown except it was during the 70 model year. Ther Master Buick Parts Cat. supports 70 Type 1 and Type 2 by name. They probably exhausted the supplier for one or just decided for reasons now lost to go to a different design.

    Randy,
You mean you can just change the button for an emblem? I have the type 2 on my 69 and always thought the whole top was different. How does the console stay closed, gravity?

    buick short console

Hello Matt, you are saying that you have a push button type on your 69? I am almost positive you should have the one with the buick logo insted of a button..The buick logo ones don't have a button at all but just a male and a female snap..Here are some pictures.. Here is a real Question for you guys.. I bought two different half consoles and they are both with the buick logo on the... But they are different sizes.. One of them is about 2-3 inches taller then the other one.. I thought that they were all the same??? So there is another twist.. For you guys out there that have these as a factory option, Is this console on your biuld sheet?? That I would like to know.. Thankyou Randy... :beer

Thanks everyone for helping to clear up the confusion on the consoles. I was hoping it was a mid year change for 70. Randy, like you I bought another one to get a better top for mine and found out the lower half is different. It came out of a Riviera and the back lower half was cut different I think to fit higher in the car. I don't have the original build sheet, but the copy I got from the Sloan museum shows it. It is a 4 speed car with the consolete and short console.

That's the same thing we did to get a good top.. I had to pound out the drift pin in each and switch out the chrome on the one.. So now we have one really nice one and one driver.. Randy
