Set of front wheel cylinders for a '65 GS

I need a set of front wheel cylinders for my '65 GS. The GS uses an 1-1/8" front wheel cylinder and the regular Skylark/Specials use a 1-1/16" front wheel cylinder. All of the replacement 1-1/8" ones I can find are the newer style that have the external type dust caps and are made differently on the back side. They also won't fit the car without grinding part of the spindle upright to clear the larger bleeder jet they come with (and you can't swap the bleeders because they are a differnet thread)
I need a set of the correct factory style 1-1/8" front wheel cylinders. Mine are so badly pitted inside that they can't be used as is.

    Me too!

Brian I may get a set too if you find a supplier. Are the rears the same as the front or the smaller dia.?

The rear ones are smaller--like 7/8". They are plentiful and easy to find--they were the same for alot of years in alot of different GM cars. The rears are also the same left and right. The front ones are a different story--specific to the '65-'66 GS and different left and right.

Have you checked NAPA auto parts, I work there if you would like me to check for you.

I haven't checked there--we don't have one here where I live. Closest one I know of is about 45 miles away from here. If you could check and let me know, that would be great!
I checked at the Federated Parts store and they can get a wheel cylinder that the books say is right for the car, but it is made differently. It has the external dust boots on it (they fit over the ends instead of inside of the ends). Because of that, they won't fit between the dimples on the brake backing plate that are made to keep the dust caps from getting pushed out. Also, they are made differently on the back side that sticks through the backing plate--the bleeder jet is much larger/longer and hits the spindle upright. I tried switching the bleeder jets, but they have different threads on them than the original ones! (I think the new ones were metric). Everywhere else I checked had the exact same thing.
I am going to attempt to attach a picture of what all the ones I have found look like (as in the ones that won't work). If they have the boots on the ends like this one that fit over the outside of the cylinder, then they won't fit. I can get a picture tonight of what the correct ones look like if you need to see one.

Brian, these wheel cylinders came with my recent '65 GS purchase. They were purchased locally at National Auto:
    www.nationalautostores.com
The manfacturer has a site at:
    www.autospecialty.com
DOUBLE CHECK THE PART NUMBERS! ....I haven' verified whether these are correct! The rubber end seals on these are Wagner#FD-129435 and measure 1.25".....maybe that will match with yours.
Another wheel cyl I got with the car , Autospecialty pn W-82023 appears to be under 7/8" dia.... :Do No: ....It may become a paperweight...

If all else fails, I'm sure you could have your originals sleeved and rebuilt.

    Brian,
The NAPA book shows part#'s 37022 & 37023 which are also 1 1/16 bore :Do No: You can go to the website (www.napaonline.com) and enter some other years and see if any match. It is a very good site, it shows pictures of every part. Good luck :TU:

Did you mean to say 1 1/8" ? The 1 1/16" front wheel cylinders came on the regular Special/Skylark with the small V8 engines. The '65 and '66 GS had 1 1/8" front wheel cylinders. I have found the 1 1/16" ones for my '64 300 car, but haven't been able to find the right ones for the GS.
Walt, the 7/8" one you have is most likely for the rear--the rear ones are 7/8" on all the cars (except the wagons) and are the same left and right.

Go to www.napaonline.com and type in the GM numbers I posted in the "other" box. It gives you the NAPA part. Check to see if those are correct.

Thanks for the help Jim! Those are the right ones. When I tried looking up the wheel cylinders by the car model, they only list the regular Skylark and not the GS, so all they show is the 1 1/4" ones.
I am going to order a set of them and see if they look like the picture.
