How do you fix a seatbelt retractor?

It pulls out, but as soon as you stop it locks up. You can get it on, but if there is any slack or when you hit a bump and retracts a bit, it locks up and won't let the slack back out.... ends up squeezing the hell out of you.

Hope this description makes sense... video should help...

By yanking it like that, your duplicating a crash scenario. And yes, it's supposed to lock up like that to keep you in your seat.

You can take the cover off and put a little wd-40 on the mechanism. It might be a little sticky after 50 years

Thanks, I will take it apart and spray it down, does the plastic cover just pop-off or is there a trick to it? I can make a slower video for you and you will be able to see that it locks up as soon as you stop pulling it and will not let any slack out. Maybe I didn't explain it well enough, it locks up during normal driving conditions and keeps getting tighter and tighter. It will not let slack out during normal operation.

    TrunkMonkey Totally bananas

Easier if you see it, than trying to 'splain it.
