Looking for a good fully synchronized Saginaw 3 speed with overdrive. These transmissions came in Chevy and GMC vans from 66 on.

Do you need the complete transmission? I believe I have the rear section, (overdrive portion) but I'd have to check to make sure. I know some guys look for these to do the Saginaw 4 speed OD conversions, so was thinking maybe that's what you are up to.

Carl, Thanks for responding. Yes, that's what I'm up to. I'd need the back end and the mainshaft that all the gears go on to do the complete conversion. I also need to find the right gears to have somewhere around a 2.54 first gear. I have several 3.11 units.

Ok, I'll have to look. I can't remember where I put that mainshaft, but I know where the rear housing is.

I found it. The rear housing, mainshaft and all the gears are all still assembled.

    I'll send you a PM.

I did that conversion like 20 years ago, it worked well. You do have to lock out the OD every time you use reverse, this was done automatically on the 3 speed but will not convert over with the 4 speed. To be honest I actually liked the 3 speed with the OD better, with the 3 speed the OD worked perfect to split the gears making a great 6 speed. With the 4 speed conversion it works great as a 5 speed but the other gears when you split them are practically identical to the regular 4 speed gears. I hope that makes sense. Good luck with your project.

Mark, If they are the new style Saginaws I'm interested. I've dug through a lot of junk yards and I've only seen one in my 60 years. They also had an overdrive for the old peanut unsyncronized Saginaw but that wont work for the conversion. If you don't mind, give me a price for yanking one of those. I'll email a shipping label to you so you can get it coming my way. Thanks, Phil

    Mark,

It's easy to tell the difference. The newer Saginaw looks like a Muncie without the reverse lever. They started making these transmissions in 66. The Saginaw before that they used from the late 40 until 65. It has a much smaller case, I call it the "peanut" transmission because it's so small.
