Hi, can someone tell me where the horn relay is placed in a Riviera -70 ? The relay is probably not OK as i don`t get any signal from the horns then I press the button at the steering wheel. The owner of the car before me probably gave up and put a new button on the steering column with new wires directly(without any relay) to the horns.
On the '68-'69 Riv the horn relay is located midway down on the rear of the drivers side fender well, just below the Buick windshield washer container. Not 100% sure, but it may possibly be the same location on a '70 ? o No:
Thanks for a fast reply, I have looked on my car and I can not see any relay at that place. I can not see any relay holder or connector either. It must be located somewhere else.
I'm not sure on the '70, but you might want to take a look with a mirror and flashlight (or just feel around or look from the wheelwell side of the inner fender) for two screw holes in the inner fender in the area Rivman mentioned. The relay may have been removed, so there might be nothing to see other than the two screw holes.
I'm here, but at work and can't recall off the top of my head where it is located. I would have thought it would be the same as '68-'69. If you don't find it, or get an answer I'll pop the hood on my car after work, or look at my '70 service manual.
looking at the '70 service manual, it appears it is under the dash near steering column, bolted to the brake pedal mounting bracket. "Buzzer & Horn Relay" See figure A in lower left of diagram. Sorry about the size of this scan. Having trouble with it. Hope this helps.
I can confirm that last post, one of my '69 Rivs has horns that won't make noise, but can hear the relay clicking from behind the dash when I hit the horn pad.
Hi, one shall be a rubber-man to see how it looks under the dash board ! So far I have not seen any relay but on page 29 in the manual one can see some type of relay on the steering column. The relay(or what it is) looks like a half moon and is not named or mensioned anywhere as far as I can see. I have also found a relay in the motor compartment mounted onThat the cup fan housing. That relay is an extra relay that I can not see on any wiring diagram so I have to do some more investigations about that. Thanks so much for all advises, you guys are a real gold mine.:Smarty:
 Ain't that the truth! I think what you are seeing there is the neutral safety switch which prevents the car from starting if it is in gear.
Hi, now I have finally found the relay. It was placed under the dash board between the glove compartment and the instrument cluster. It is not easy to remove the relay because one have to remove the dash board and the instrument cluster to get access to it. How can anyone place a relay at that place ??? Many thanks !
Are you sure that is the horn relay 'cause it doesn't match the location shown in Dale's scan of the instrument panel wiring ? o No:
I am absolutely sure that the relay is the Horn and Buzzer relay. The colours of the wires are right and I have also checked that it is contact between the horn button to the connector on the relay and from the horn relay connector to the horns. The placement of the relay is near the pedal mounting bracket but more to the right. Its mounted on a plate to the right of the clock. Maybe it has been moved once in a time. I can see holes on the pedal mounting bracket so it has probably been sitting there before. Anyone who know where I can buy a new relay ?
