Ricer at the track

This is not a real kill story, but I thought it was pretty funny -

The local musclecar club had a car show and bracket race at Thunderbird Raceway in Muskegon Michigan. Things being what they are nowadays, there were a number of ricers at the event.

I was walking through the pits and I saw a kid with an "tricked out" Eclipse. He was really mad and almost in tears, having just lost his heat. I said the first tactless thing that came to my mind, as I usually do - "Dude, get a horse!!!"

The poor kid turns toward me and yells "I don't need to get a horse - I just need to remember to turn my f***ing traction control off!!!"

Then I noticed his dial in time - 17.10!!!!

I decided not to torment him any more - just walked away....

Man John, I haven't heard the "Get a horse" expression for decades. Good one, but it's too bad folks are so sensitive today :ball: and boob about everything. And then of course, you feel guilty for being insensitive.:pp

If you want to have some fun and make some money you should go to some of the Import Shootout bracket races. When I had my 240SX I went to one of these races and it was pathetic. Most reaction times were in the 1.0+ range, and their ETs varied by almost as much. I hadn't been racing for too long at that point, but I could pull pretty consistent .55/.6 lights and my ETs were pretty much dead on so I thought I had a pretty good shot. My brother was also there running his '88 Colt Vista pushing it to consistent 18s. We ended up cleaning up, I raced my brother in the final round and beat him out - we took home $150 total.. not a bad deal and a lot of fun whipping up on some rice!

I have seen the same thing ever since I first went to an Import Shootout about 6 years ago. They have consistently horrible reaction times usually always above .800 and they always miss shifts or shift at all the wrong times/rpms, drive through the water pit for people w/slicks and do excessive burnouts on street tires. Bracket racing them is a joke. If my wagon could get into "import status" like they sometimes let GN's/T-Types, I'd mop them all up easily but that'll never happen. I usually go to the Import races with my 72 Datsun 1200 that was my first car. Stock it has 69 hp and that's using the old method of measuring horsepower (gross?) and it ran 19's. Since I've had it, I rebuilt the engine with a stock bottom end, 8.5:1 compression, mild cam (229 dur .414 lift at .050"), home ported head, dual 40 mm Dellorto carbs, a header, and MSD box, and it now runs low 16's....good enough to beat most Hondas and other ricers. That car only runs 16's and they think it is SO fast when I beat them....hahaha. Of course then they have to start talking trash... "their friend" that can beat me with a FAST ricer that's got a Turbo kit, "NOS", and whatever else they can think of. Then the next week I show up in my 5000 lb Buick station wagon that runs 13's and waste "their friend" I will never forget my race with a Maxima that was ALL done up. The look he gave his friends as they were all joking on the wagon when we pulled up to the staging lanes.....he SOO thought he owned me, but he never caught up. My friends started cheering in their faces when I won, they just shut up, walked away, and the guy parked his car the rest of the night.....Ricers are fun to kill.

Most 240SX'ers are a different breed of import owner :Brow:

Yeah I know, because most of them know that the 240SX is the Silvia in Japan, and it's a good looking car and is RWD. I actually will probably be buying a Silvia here in a month or two, I'm moving to Japan. Also I am looking at putting the Silvia engine (SR20 DET) in my Datsun (1500 lbs loaded) while I am there. The Buick has to wait until I return, all my attention goes to my Datsun becuase it came first, and is my real baby. What do stock 240's run in the quarter anyway? Stock Silvias are high 13's, hard to imagine what a modded SR20 would do in my 1500 lb car...hehehe

So long as they are SR20DET equipped, I believe they can touch 13's in stock form...

89-94 240's run in the high 15's/low 16's, 95-98 240's run in the low 15's (my friend ran a 15.2 in his with nothing more than a manifold/header back 2.5" exhaust system and the boat anchor KA24DE)

I've replaced both engines in both body styles... many, many times. ... the SR20 is on the truck here (for him)... so soon I may have some experience converting.

I had a '95 240SX with a Hot Shot header, Apex'i N1 exhaust (3" from header back"), and a random tech cat. My best time was a 15.7@91 with a 2.4 60' on worn out Classic Radials and an open rear. The track I run at (Beaver Springs) is about .2 or .3 off most tracks since it is slightly uphill. Going by trap speed alone that is good for ETs well into the 14s, I was always tempted to get some real tires on the car and install the limited slip rear to see what it would do but I ended up selling it for the Z. I wish I never would have sold it though, the guy I sold it to riced it out and then totalled it within a span of 3 months.
In totally stock form I think a '95-'98 240SX will run about a 16 flat, maybe a high 15 at 86 or 87, but once you open up the exhaust they really start to perk up.

My friends is a '95 SE... which means he has the limited slip differential from the factory. He ran it somewhere in Arizona... his 60ft was in the 2.1 range. He had a '90 previously, which I personally liked better. The '95 feels too heavy and luxury like for me, I liked the way the '90 felt like a stripped down go-kart. The '90 was slower but felt faster and handled better with the same modifications. They are pretty decent cars, but I like the "other" 240 better :TU: (240Z)

Mine was a '95 SE also, but I think they only came with a limited slip if they had ABS (which mine didn't). I've never driven an S13 240SX, I've heard good things about them, but I love the look of the S14 240SXs. I would really like to get a 240Z sometime too, especially with an RB26 swap!

Yeah stock Silvia's w/SR20DET hit 13's with a good driver no problem. Here's a picture of what I will be doing with my Datsun, this one has a CA18DET which was offered in some early 180SX/Silvias, I will be using the SR20, but this Datsun has a bigger turbo and runs 10's!

Hmm, my little Datsun is getting 2.3 second 60' times but I haven't broken into the 15's yet. I think it's because of the tranny, 2nd to 3rd is a big jump and you really have to wind it up in 2nd, and it still isn't in it's kill zone of the power band after goin to 3rd. I also have to fix a carb problem too, but the way it usually goes at the track is I waste cars way out of my league off the line, through 2nd, and then they catch up when I go to 3rd. I can't wait to swap engines!

    I stand corrected. When I think 13's from a factory stock car I don't think about 4 cylinders. I suppose I'm cylinder-ist.

Last night at the track there was a 90 240SX with an SR20DET in it with a bigger intercooler, turbo, injectors. Best run I saw was 13.000....not too bad! No Buicks of course, closest thing was a 442 all done up ran 12.5's and pulled wheels up every time. My Datsun 1200 ran 16.3's, I was so close to beating a new Civic Si that was all done up. My car weighed in at 1910lbs w/me in, so online calc's estimate about 112 horses at the fly....not bad for 1.5L pushrod power! Wish I had my Buick there......

i used to drive a 90 240sx daily, with a newer sr20det (the t28 on t25) with an lsd and some cheathers i could pull high 12s
-front mount intercooler w/ sprayer - the only thing nitrous is good for
-three inch from the turbo back
    otherwise stock
i miss that car, i let my kick brother take it to prom. he got load and wrecked it

I really don't like people who make excuses about there times unless it is a really good one. If you get a bad time just work on the car some more and take it out again. But in the case of a Ricer I don't think that theres much they can do.

good excuse for a bad time? MY tires blew, I overrevved the engine and she windowed the block, etc.

The best one I've heard is from a 94 RX7 Turbo... every time he loses (he's an awful driver) he says "Oh, I missed a gear" ... this has been going on for two years.
