reverse lock out?

Discussion in 'U-shift em' started by Kelly Eber, Apr 12, 2005.

I'm new to the world of 4 speeds. What does the reverse lockout setup do exactly and why. Is there a big problem with 4 speeds spontaneously shifting into reverse? My car does not have a reverse lock out setup on it. At what point should I consider installing one? Thanks.

The reverse lockout is for when you want to pull the key it takes and turns the steering column to the "Park" position if it was an automatic trans car. At that point the "Park" position is actually reverse on a stick with the lock out installed. then the key comes out at that time. Hope I didnt confuse you to bad :Smarty:

In race applications the reverse lockout is as you described . It keeps the driver from over shifting into reverse in both automatic and stick applications. In a four or five speed you will see a second handle that must be used to engage reverse. Once you start doing a lot of passes at the drag strip , someone in tech will eventually say something about it .
In automatic applications there is usually a separate trigger.

On 70-72 cars, the reverse lock out mechanism also operates the back up lights.

Ok, so since my car is a 68 it has the key in the dash, no big deal then. Thanks. :3gears:
