    Hi All,
The previous owner did a conversion from auto to m-20 on my car. What im trying to figure out is how to properly hook up the reverse lights. did he possibly not change something to make them work? Im not sure where to start to get correct my problem. Problem is no reverse lights. Thanks for the help!

trans should have a reverse light switch in it or else put one there and run your wires to it

The reverse lights are actuated by the back drive mechanism.

There should be a swivel bracket on the tranny with a rod that goes to a pivot in the frame. Then there is a long rod that attaches there and goes up to a tab on the steering column. When you shift into reverse, the rod from the frame to the column moves up, and turns the bowl on the steering column. The reverse switch is moved to actuate the reverse lights.

This linkage also prevents you from shutting the car off unless the tranny is in reverse, then the column is locked.

It is a real Rube Goldberg contrapion, but it works.

You can see the whole assembly in an assembly manual.

:idea2: here's a pic of what the linkage at the trans should look like....

also I think you need a 4 speed steering column.....

I have all the correct parts... your more then welcome to check them out to see what you need.....

    Hi mark,
My was a conversion the previous owner had done but based on my books and what your diagram shows it appears to be exact except the retainers are the hurst ones. i think my column is correct. I'm really wondering if it has something to do with the switch on the column. Now I have the car I hope to check it out. Im wondering if the rod is hooked up to that switch....

Here is the update. Took off switch located on column near fire...cleaned it up...thought about how it could work...figure teh metal sleeve in colum must have a hole in to to move switch back and forth. Slapped it onand made sure the switched was pulled down tight to column. and she started working...waaaalllaaahhh...assuming switch was notsitting correctly on the column base that move the contact. Wish I woult have done since last year before by that 25 univeral switch. lol Thanks GUYS!!!
