Retainer to Rocker Interference

Discussion in 'Race 400/430/455' started by Buick, Apr 19, 2006.

    PROBLEM:
When I pulled the rockers (blue rollers; Poston probably) I noticed the underside of a few of them where the anodizing was worn through right at the relief for the valve retainer. This is from a head with retainers about 1/32" smaller than 1.375 retainers on another head that I am about to install.

    QUESTION:
Do I need to buy new rockers or have these clearanced to run the bigger spring/retainer combo? Or was something else the matter?

you can go in there and make your own clearance. I had to do the same. A couple of ways of removing material but be careful do a little at a time and check. T/A said they do the same for those running big springs/big pressure for clearance too. Just be sure you remove them from the shaft and be sure to clean stuff extra good. Mark peices as you remove apart so they go back together the same way. Lube bearings before assembly and check closely for valve to rocker tip alignment. I spent bunch of time on that to get them to fit right. Might need new shims for proper spacing. They only sell .030 and .060 shims for them, but you can find valve spring shims that have the same shaft diameter with a thickness of .015, that helps a bunches for setting proper alignment.

    good luck
