I've got a few bolts to replace throughout the engine. Should I shoot for any special kind, or are regular old zinc bolts ok?

The specific application for the hardware may change the grade required.

Be specific on the bolts. Some are available still some not. Most in the engine compartment were a phosphate coating which is dark gray or black.

I need a couple of the small bolts from the water pump and one of the bolts that holds the thermostat housing on.

Garden variety grade 5 bolts from the hardware store will be fine. 1/4-20 for the water pump. Im pretty sure an inch long will work fine. The t-stat is 5/16-18. Going by memory, I think they're an inch long as well.

What about for exhaust pieces? I need a couple bolts to fit the flanges together from the manifold to the pipe. Anything special there?

Those are often in the help section at the local parts store.

I recall they are studs with long brass nuts.:puzzled:

Don't assume the factory used studs. 70-72 455 used bolts not studs. Everyone uses studs because that is the easy way out. Assembly manual shows a bolt with a part number at least for 455 I am talking about.

Home desperate or Lowes have a lousy nut and bolt selection. My local Ace Hardware has black oxide flare head bolts in almost every engine accessory bolt size needed. Do-it-best may also be a good store but don't go to them often.

The box stores suck for bolts and hand tools. I've got a couple of good hardware stores around with good bolt selections. I'll hit them up.

I agree. Ace bought out a chain of hardware stores here in Columbus, but they still maintain a huge selection of Hillman fasteners in pull-out trays. Their flange head bolts (and nuts) are grade 5, and black oxide coated. I use them extensively. Great fasteners!

Just a tip, but use anti-seize on the longer water pump bolts. Saves a lot of heart ache down the road.

I think the exhaust bolts were non flange types

You're correct, exhaust bolts are a different story. There are threads about them on the board, and I think most lengths can be had as exact relpacements. I seem to remember they are available from a Ford parts supplier. A search may be in order.

Jim, I think he is looking for the bolts that hold the exhaust pipe flange to the bottom of the manifold. Different animal than the exhaust manifold bolts that you can get from AMK.

This is correct. I got the manifold bolts from TA.
