OK, I have worked on my Buick and have my dash taken apart. I have everything fixed but my dash lights don't work. I have chased it down to the light switch on the dash, however I can not figure out how to remove it? There are two nuts on the back side of the dash, but I can't get it out. I thought I should throw the question out to you experts before I try anything more, and possible wreck something. Thanks for any help.

OK found a picture to help explain. The there are two chrome "cups" on each side of the steering wheel, on on the left is the light switch, pull the knob out for lights on, turn for dim control. I can't get the knob off of the switch, or get the switch out. I am afraid to pry the chrome cup, wrecking the paint on the dash, or chipping the chrome cup. How do I get the switch out? The fan switch on the right chrome cup is easy, there is a set screw on the knob. The left knob has no visible set screw???

Okay, on hand I do not know... But my dash is apart right now and in the mornin' I'll take a few minutes and check it out. Just be patient, your dash looks too nice to be prying off of!

Just guessing here, but I would check the switch itself for a little button you depress just like the later model cars. The button on the switch body releases a catch that lets the knob pull out with the "stalk" still attached to it. Then the chrome cup probably unscrews from the switch and releases the switch from the dash panel.

Thanks so much for the responses, I know someone would have a dash apart they could check. I don't think the shaft of the switch is that advanced to be hollowed out and have a hidden release, looks like a solid shaft to me. I will try and be patient and wait for an answer. Hope everyone is having a great weekend (in the garage!)

    No, Dave, listen carefully...

Reach up under the dash and find the body of the headlight switch. Feel around the body of the switch and find the little pin with button head sticking out. Press that pin in. While holding it in, pull the headlight switch knob out. All the way out. Out of the body of the light switch. Having done that, the nut that holds the switch body to the dash can be loosened and removed.

I do not have a picture of a headlight switch to show you. Look in your shop manual maybe.

    OK,
Found the button, you are right. Thank you all for the answer to this. Took the switch out, removed corrosion, lubed mechanical parts, and it worked! Wow it will be great to have dash lights at night.
