How do you know if it is the alternator or the regulator when the red ALT light comes on and stays on?

    :Do No:

    Yeah, mine just did....

    Got a voltmeter?
With the car running, battery should be 12 volts.

< 12 volts alternator is bad
    > 12 volts regulator is bad.

    No Voltmeter?
Loosen the positive battery cable so it can be removed easily. With the car running, carefully remove the positive cable. If the car dies, the alternator is bad.

PS - my Stage1 recently threw the alternator belt :Do No: and the light went on. Check the belt first. There is a different alternator belt for the Stage1 455s than the standard 455s.

With the car running the voltage should be 14 volts, Plus or minus .3 volts.

OK. For those of us with no experience using an OHM meter, please explain what I hook the wires to and what I set the dial to in order to check the voltage at the battery...

    gracias...

    Jeff-

Set your gauge to 'DC' (direct current) and pick a number just above where you expect the readings.

Expecting to find no more that 14.3 volts, pick the closest number on the 'DC' setting greater than 14 (no > Jerry :Brow: ), probably will either be 20, 25, or 30.

The positive (red) lead on the tester goes to the positive battery post and the negative lead (also called ground or common) goes to the negative battery post.

If you still have questions, send me a PM.

Or if you want to get real high-tech, purchase an auto-ranging multimeter. Use em at work all the time.
