You can get gasket material in rolls at an auto parts store. Not sure exactly what you have for an oil pan. Carb gaskets are basically a paper type, not rubber or cork like an oil pan typically is.

    I'd bet you'd notice a big improvement going to dual 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" pipes verses 1 1/2"

With my relatively stock motor, there with four major things I changed at once. I installed an 850cfm Holley DP, I did the Doc Dual Plane mod, I installed a dual 2 1/4in exhaust system with Flowmasters, and replaced the fixed 4 blade fan with an electric fan. It was night and day. And this was with mildly ported manifolds, and heads that were rebuilt with a valve job, but no porting.

It wasnt in the plan to do the exhaust now, but just looked up some parts ( bend over rear aksel and 2 "no name" 2" mufflers ) = $100 + some pipe I get from my work :)

Well, maybe I gotta wait for next year, cause I just dont seem to find the time.. We have SOOO much to do at work :( This monday I held i day off from the job, to get te time to get all the seats out to be done in time for the season ( Original = Worn out )

For posterity - the Doc mod on my car with no other changes.......I finally sat down and did the math

I made 10 1/4 mile runs in my 65 as measured on my G-Tech on 5/21 and 6/10 in 2010 - the average (taking out one run with significant wheelspin) was 15.35 @96.3 mph.

I did the doc mod on my AFB manifold and made no other changes, went back out on 9/6, and made 4 runs for an average of 15.06 @ 97.7 (taking out one run with significant wheelspin)

(Please note the G-tech measures MPH at the end of the 1/4 mile, unlike at the strip - these were closer to "93MPH" runs)

Any way you slice it, there was a difference of .28 tenths, and 1.33 MPH, strictly attributable to the Doc mod. The only other modifications to the car at that point were a clutch fan, air cleaner baffle removal and air bags in the rear springs to jack for traction on the open diff. It still had the 3.08 gear at that point.

Here are the runs - wheelspin runs deleted.

    15.63 94.70
    15.38 94.20
    15.64 92.50
    15.26 93.90
    15.14 95.60
    15.26 95.50
    15.47 96.70
    14.99 96.90

    15.35 96.37

    15.10 97.7
    15.10 96.8
    14.99 98.6

    15.06 97.7

Doc, I think that would make a nice addition to the sticky.

I appreciate your work , Rhett..... But, I dont know how to ''sticky'' stuff.....:Brow:
It is good to see that much difference with so little expense and effort....
Mods have a way of ''multiplying'' effects... wonder what this stuff will lead to....:Do No:

Good data Rhett, thanks for posting!:TU:

The Nailhead forum moderator, JESUPERCAT, would be the one to contact concerning a 'sticky'.
Or just add the info to the sticky thread:
    http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?225437-Doc-s-dual-plane-mod-and-port-matching-stky

OR... Doc or Rhett, you could go back to one of your earlier posts in that sticky, then 'Edit' your post to add Rhetts results.
While there's an incredible amount of great info on this site, it sure can be hard to find!
When I do find info I want to keep, I often just cut and past the info into a Word or Wordpad document, and save it into my own files. I'll cut and paste the link and writers name as well so the original post can be easily found.

    Hey..

I would like to get the exhaust in 2 1/4", but my normal cheap parts shop only have bends and pipes in 2" and 2 1/2".. What to do? The stock exhaust manifolds is around 2", but is it to much work for that ekstra 1/2" ?

And how much muffler do I need, I want more sound but still quiet enough to suit the big car..

    Thank you again :-D

I would ''bell out'' from the head pipes as far up as possible, then go 2 1/2 on out to the rear bumper..... and you will need about 26 inches of muffler on each side.... I have seen 1st. gen riv guys weld 2 mufflers side by side... but I built my own :Brow::eek2:....

Do the nailhead make a lot of noise, or is it a "quiet" motor? The new owner of my old skylark ( 350 4bbl ) made the exhaust without any mufflers, just with straigth 2 1/2" pipes, and that thing makes sweet noise.. Just want to hear the v8, without wearing ear protection..

Something like that? Or more like a regular muffler with more backpressure?

I wouldn't go with straight pipes. Your ears will bleed...

Go with whatever muffler you think sounds the best. Each type sounds a little different.

I loved my 2" exhaust with plain cheapo 20 + inch mufflers and constricted bends- was super quiet, and had a kind of understated "glass pack" staccato under WOT. I went to a full 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent system with X pipe and long Dynomax mufflers. Still quiet and doesn't drone much, but lost that cool edgy sound. And I really didn't pick up significant ET with the stocker motor.

    Just my 2 cents...

So when you went from 2" to 2", there was no "ekstra" performance? Not looking for high rev power, just more moment in the lower rpm..

And sound wise, what did sound the loudest? Im looking for something like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBVxCsKCjk4

Neither of my exhausts ever sounded quite like that, because they were on a stock car and I was going for a different effect - I wanted it to have a deep tone but be very quiet at idle. With the 2 1/2 inch pipes I got that, but it drones a little at 3000 rpm. Under full throttle it sounds great, but doesn't have that cool sound it used to - almost like a glass packed car, or a flathead Ford.

For the sound you're looking for, you might want to ask Bob / 66GSConv - in the first page of this thread there's a video of his car - it sounds more like what you're after than my car ever did.

All of you that helped, you are all welcome to come and stay at my house in Denmark, with a free car to borrow ;-)

I nailed the ''muscle car sound '' with the muffler I made for my riv.... but at wot it will get ''talky''..... no drone.... :Brow:

The main restriction with buick factory muffler systems was that they would reduce the pipe size coming out of the stock muffler from 2'' at the front , down to 1.75 at the rear.... if you install mufflers and pipes that are 2'' coming out , and with 2'' pipes to the back bumper, then you have already eliminated most of the restriction....:Brow:

Houmark - Don't think I wont take you up on that offer, Copenhagen has been one of my favorite cities for years. Where are you located? That'll give me a chance to swing up to Stockholm and see how my 71 GS is doing too...I understand there's a bridge to Malmo now!

I'll find some maps showing where I live when I'm sitting with a computer instead of my telephone.. It' takes about 3 hours, over 2 bridges, to get to malm from my house..

    Cool!

In the US, Scandinavia isn't generally the first area people think of when they book vacations. I wound up in Denmark and Sweden kind of unexpectedly about 20 years ago, and I've been dying to go back. The people are great, the women are beautiful, the beer is EXCELLENT and they actually generally like Americans ...... it's just a very, very cool place to visit.
