My '71 Skylark has the convenience lighting option with the maplight in the rearview mirror. The problem is the maplight does not come on (I only tested it recently as I didn't realize my car had the maplight) - how do I remove the light from the rearview mirror - I'm not sure how to access it and I don't want to break something in the process.
I had the same option on a '70 LeSabre. The lens pops out easily, use your fingernail on the stud that sticks out from the lens. The bulb (shaped like a fuse) is best popped out with a small screwdriver from one end. I couldn't find a replacement 10+ years ago, but that may have changed.
>>Hi Dave, Thanks for the bulb number - I was able to remove it today and the metal contacts look very clean so I will see about getting a replacement bulb tomorrow.
>>Well, I was able to remove the bulb and I found a brand new one - went to put it back in the rearview mirror and still no light. Then I traced the wire up to the headliner and noticed a small break in the line! :af: Oh well, perhaps in the future I can get a new wire for the maplight.
I had a wire break in my tail light and bought a wire splicer type plier that had a crimping feature and I used a plastic covered electrical wire connector, put both ends of wire in each end, crimped them down and everything was good to go. Still working today. If the pliers are too big, I used wire cutter pliers with just a wee bit of force to crimp. Took me several time though as the first couple of time I cut through the connector. To strong of a grip I guess. ou: A short nose needle type pliers would work to I'd guess. Still working today. Jim
>>Thanks for looking into it Steve. I didn't get the chance to try and 'fix' the wire yet but I'll give it a shot this week.
Chris, I found a couple. One butchered pretty bad. Second has had the factory end at the mirror resoldered. Not sure if it will go into the mirror. Far end is cut but it will reach to under the dash. It is still fed thru the mirror arm & you will need to make the swap. Let me know.
>>Hi Steve. Let me give fixing my wire a try first - I'm hoping to try it this Friday. I'll let you know how I make out on it.
Mine only worked once a year, while on a ski trip in Northern Michigan. It was this way for 5 years. I never got around to fixing it, but I imagine the contacts were in need of cleaning. It was a strange problem.
