What kind of power are you going to throw at it, and how much do you want to spend? The 7.5 will take a lot of abuse.

7.5 will handle that especially if it is an automatic. I ran mine to 12.40's w/ 9in slicks with no problems. If your 7.5 isn't set up the way you want and you are going to throw money at it, I would seriously look into up grading now, sooner or later you feel the need for more and your money will have ben well spent. If you are trying to run on a tight budget there are still some montie SS rear ends which sports 3.73 gears that can be had pretty cheap. Good luck.

thanks ,but i still have a question i have a 2.41 ratio and was wondering about the carrier ?

What is the question about the carrier? Once you go above 3.08 you will need a different carrier.

will a carrier out of a s-10 work

It will physically fit but you have to make sure the axles are the same. Most S-10s had larger axles.

it a 3.73 but you couldn't use the axles out of the regal rearend and will it stand a spool

not meaning to thread jack or anything but i have a similar question. would u have to upgrade rear end components at all to handle higher (350-400hp) and if so, what would it entail?

You could put a spool in it but I wouldn't recomend it for a street car. The car will push and hop around corners and as soon as you hit some fowl weather your asking for trouble. The small regal axles aren't going to like it either. By the time you put money into a spool and bearings you can buy a montie ss rear. There are several for sale on - Malibu Racing.com. Sounds like your willing to wrench on it, see if you can get a #3 center section and put it together with the 3.73 gears
Hey Regal - As I said earlier the stock 7.5 will take a lot of abuse w/o any upgrades. If you plan on putting more HP in later I would recomend spending your money wisely now. Bigger-Better

Having installed more than my fair share of spools, & witnesssed the results of many many twisted & snapped axles, I never use spools in 26 or 28 spline applications on the street. In dirt track applications (factory stockers), a 28 spline spool & stock bolt-in axles is fine, the tires slip quite a bit, & there is a lot less rotating mass ( a few free HP) with a spool than with a "Lincoln-locker". In 12 bolts in 3600-3800lb A-body's, 33 spline Strange is spool is min I'll install in a spool/aftermarket axle build. Stock axles, c-clip elims, & spool... won't do it, been there, done that :(

Considering an upgraded 7.5 G-body rear, I'd look at how much I was going to throw at it money wise. On a mild streetcar, just a gear install with new quality gears & a $125 used oem cone type posi is going to push the outlay up to around $630. That's $630 + owners time installing the rear, on a 26 spline c-clip rear which will work fine in a putt around cruiser, but does not offer a lot of pinion support when one really has a dialed in strong street/strip car. Throw enough torque at the 7.5, & the get the rear tires to hook, & one is on borrowed time... have picked up the pieces from quite a few. In it for the long run, before spending $630 or $250+ more (with aftermarket axles), would suggest one either watch for a well built 8.5 G body rear (upgraded with 30 spline bolt-in axles) or consider a well built 9". With either alternative, one has a r/e that one can throw a ton of torque at.

Building a cruiser, & want cheap r/e parts prices, stay with the 7.5, watch for used 3.73 R & P from an S-10, & a used (hopefully tight) low ratio (3.23-3.42-3.73) oem cone type posi out of an '82-87 GM car. Can't get the used gears to be quiet, a pair of 40 series Flows & a loud stereo will help drown out the noise. Good luck on whatever you choose.

    rearend

i have a s-10 with 3.73 and a extra regal rearend . i was going to put the carrier and gears in the extra 7.5 then buy a mini spool in it cause, i haven't seen the full spool for the 7.5 plus i don't like the price. then when i was ready just swing it in the car. thats what i was going to do. but when i get a chance i will go to the junkyard and see what i can find.

    Hi Roger,

Not that I'm working on my Regal much due to my health at the present time, but I noticed that you mention 30-spline "bolt-in axles" for the G-Body 8.5". My Regal has an '85 GN 8.5" that has been gone thru a couple of years back (30-spline axles with Eaton posi, TA rearend girdle, forged 1350 yoke with axle tubes welded to center section and unfortunately C-clip elim's) but was told then that there were no ends to be had to convert the 8.5" to bolt-in axles by Moser?!?! Has something changed and now someone is offering ends for the job?:Do No:

I also bought a new Detroit Locker last summer for it to replace the Eaton when I can get back to the car again. Thanks for any info, I will add it to my Regal folder for future reference!:TU:

I have a good 7.5" 3.42 non-posi Monte SS rear axle that's just in my way. Maybe you could make use of some or all of it. Bring me a case of beer and you can take it away!

rears, but you do have to watch axle splines.
on gn 8.5 rears most guys are welding on big bearings (ford or olds)
to change to bolt in axles. i have in my car now

My '84 t-type has a good working rear with a posi unit to fit. The posi (stock) came with the car and is still in the cardboard box. If you would like to make an offer just email mrunning307@hotmail.com or PM me .. Good luck.
