I have discovered that my 1967 GS 400 restoration project was factory equipped with a rear speaker. I have not seen one before, and except for the wire, nothing original is there. I think I found the correct speaker grill, but wasn’t sure what the package tray material should be. Is it the standard black fiber board material or some type of mesh??? If anyone has any photos or references I would appreciate it. Jarrod
Was there a speaker grill stock? When I replaced my package tray, it was the mesh kind, and there were a series of holes drilled in the main board for the speakers. The mesh covered that. I was able to attach the speakers underneath. Much cleaner look that way. Not sure what Buick did way back when?
Yes the original radio is there with rear speaker wire and fader control. I was just curious what stock package tray area looked liked. If it was indeed the mesh covering the holes in the fiberboard??? Or an actual speaker grill like in the assembly manual.
Jarrod, if it came from the factory with a rr speaker it was most likely mesh. That's what my 67 GS 400 has. If it was dealer installed, they would have used a grill.
My 67 GS400 came with an AM/FM radio and rear speaker. The package tray I removed was mesh with no grill. I bought a grill to install on the new package tray after seeing it in the assembly manual, but like Frank said, I think those grills were only installed at dealerships that added a rear speaker after production. Here are a few pictures from before I "refreshed" the interior and then pictures of the replacement package tray I used.
Just echoing what the others have already stated, a '67 GS400 with the optional rear seat speaker would have a mesh package tray with provisions for a single speaker. No speaker grill was used for factory installations.
