rear ends.

Discussion in 'Got gears?' started by jamiesonlesabre, Apr 12, 2014.

  1. I'm sorry if this has Bern discussed before. But what rear ends fit in a 1970 Buick lesabre. I don't mean just ring and pinion. Or a posi. I mean a brand new rear. The whole nine yards. I want a 3.43 posi or something around there. I don't want to hassle with having to mod a carrier or any of that. I'm just gunna go for the whole shibang. Please help would be lovely.

I don't think anyone makes new rear ends for that car. Your best bet is to either have a rear end builder find a core and build it for you or have a local shop rebuild your rear end with a different carrier and possi. I got my rear end from Monzaz on this board, he was great to deal with and the rear end is awesome!

To echo what Sean said, Jim (monzaz) is currently putting together a rear for me as well. He is a pleasure to deal with and as knowledgeable as they come. Get ahold of him and pick his brain.

  4. I was thinking more of something off the shelf. Like buying something online vs having one built.

You can get a 68-70 Buick 8.2 new ring and pinion for a 70 LeSabre with a 350. There are no repros for a 70 LeSabre 455 because it carries a 9 3/8" ring gear.

  6. I've read some of the conversations about this. I ment more of New pumpkin axles blah blah blah like getting a for 9 inch into it or something along those lines. I'm not much for keeping the car all stock and all buick I just want the car to git up and go and I mean really go! Has any one done something like this?

You're not going to find much "off the shelf" after market support for that platform unfortunately. For what you are wanting to do you're going to have to have it built to order most likely. If you want a 9 inch you're going to probably have to have a blank housing setup for your application. Can't say I've searched for that kinda thing, but I've scoured for a lot of Buick parts and don't think I've ever seen a rear you could "1 click" order complete off the shelf that'd be plug and play.

  8. Well.then I guess ill be one of the first to do this in a road car. So the adventure begins.

  9. ok more oof what i ment is what housing is the correct size as in dimentions to fit into a b body

For what you want you'll need to go completely custom. Which means you'll have to measure everything as in control arm mounting points overall width of housing and where you'd want it with axles and brakes. Then get a custom 9" ford rear or similar built by currie or Moser, etc.

A custom NEW-everything rear when all is said and done (extras like brakes .. new drive shaft etc) is going to cost you north of 3K. Currie, Strange S60, Moser and a few others will custom make anything you want ... Ford 9", 12-bolt schevy style or S60 - you need to do your homework and decide what advantages each offers is the direction you want to go

... BUT regardless of which you choose, you better be darn sure you pick up the phone and order it that you're telling them the exact measurements they need - and they are correct - or else you've got a 3K rather large door stop.

Or, for about half the price you can have yours reworked to like-new knowing it is correct.

  12. Thank you thank you! Then I guess this is my last dumb question. If I got a Chevy rear from the same year ect ext, Would that theoretically work? Either way. It's not super high up on my priority list right now but having a posi would be way more fun. One tire fires don't do it after a while haha.

I think you really need to take some pictures of what you have, post them up here .. and then PM MONZAZ and have him take a look, and then discuss with him through PMs or on the phone what your options are.

To be honest, unless you are thinking of putting a monster motor in it, spending >3k on a custom rear when you could spend prolly less than half of that on yours (Which you KNOW fits) and the rest on motor upgrades is a better route to take.

Good luck ... hope this helps

Back in the day of my 70 Electra it had that 9 3/8 rear end and I think I put a 8.5 10 bolt out of a pontiac and it bolted right in. It might have come from a Bonneville.

  15. That's interesting. I'm not planning on a monster motor or anything, although I do.have a line on a 455 that just might have to be dropped in. But I really just want to be able to use the tourque I know the engine has.

I agree that having a local reputable shop build your rear end as the best choice, and cheapest. Once you start making bigger torque through the axle shafts due to lower gears, they can get a bit twistsy :( Mosier or such will make axles that will hold up to any tire you put on there :)

But, for a second opinion you might also call these guys http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/tomp.htm The do a lot of BOP rear end upgrades.

I also agree about taking a snaps of what you have a and seeing what the knowledgeable board members think after we see what's there ...

There is nothing wrong with your current rear end, as long as you are not drag racing with huge slicks and even then it would be fine I bet.

    1. Take pictures of the rear end
    2. Contact MONZAZ and show him the pictures
    3. Take Monzaz advice and order your parts through him
    4. Pay a local shop to install the parts
    5. Drive the car as hard as you want, it will be fine

Also, you can swap out an entire rear end from a GM A body from 1965-1970:

    Chevrolet Bel Air
    Chevrolet Impala
    Pontiac Parisienne
    Pontiac Catalina/Laurentian
    Pontiac Bonneville
    Chevrolet Caprice
    Chevrolet Biscayne
