Need some help identifying a rear, it does not have the tabs at 5 and 7 o'clock. Measures 55 3/8 from one end to the other. Everything is disassembled. Found N 023 stamped on the axle housing where the 1970 identification usually is (drivers side, bottom of housing). Ring gear with this measures around 8 1/4 maybe a little under.
10 bolt holes on cover, 27 spline axles
Guy had this in storage and he was a friend of a friend so I got a pig in a poke.

Ok the housing is a 1968-1970 Buick skylark / GS etc.
The posi is a BOP But we need to do a bit more questioning to see exactly what you have

It is a 2 pinion posi not the strongest one produces as the 4 pinion one is the super duty GS and GTO or w30 442. BUT a posi non the less. Good for you.

We need to measure the driver side bearing compared to the passenger side bearing. IF you have the races are they the same? IF the driver side (ring gear side) bearing is larger than the passenger side carrier bearing then you have a 68-70 Buick posi and you have a MATCHED set... Way to go you actually have something to work with.

BUT if both carrier bearing are the same you have a early 65-67 Buick , Olds, Pontiac posi unit ...Not goo dwith that housing you have BUT again you do have a posi...That is still good as some one will want it.

Also measure the unit sitting on its ring gear carrier bearing (stand the posi on end where the axle shaft would go through. Now measure from the flat table surface to the machined surface where the ring gear bolts ...What is the measurement to the closest 1/16 or and inch (example 1 1/2" 1 3/4" 2 " etc.)

I have a picture of how the carrier differences look next to each other.

    Thanks for the help.

The carrier bearings are different, one is larger than the other.

1.700 or a little larger than 1 11/16 if I measured correctly. This was the distance from the edge to the ring gear flange. Let me know if this makes sense.

kind of blurry looks like a 3.23 carrier which is also a 3.42 bcarrier in the 68-70 buick rears. Better picture to the 1/16 of an inch will help. Jim

I can try to get a better shot but I am confident in the measurement I got, just need to confirm I have the proper orientation.
