I may emial Jim about this at JD race....but here it goes.

I currently have a 69 peg leg 2 series 8.2 10 bolt rear end in my GS cali...i would really like to have a posi 373 set up...either in the current 8.2 or a 8.5 corporate. however, the easiest and cheapest way is what i will go with.

Now on Jim's website he sells gears for the different rear ends...however i am under the impression that my 8.2 2 series will not take anything above about a 2.93 without a new 3 series carrier.

My question is what all would i need to do to keep the axle/bell housing et. and just replace the insides to make it a 3.43-3.73 posi?

Would a 8.2 3 series carrier and then new 8.2 3.55 gears work? All fit in the original bell housing?

Jim do you have any input? I would be looking to possibly buy from you in the future?

Will the 8.2 hold up to the street brawling of a 400+ HP 455?
    Thanks!

two series diffs can be "converted" into three series with a ring gear spacer. I have used them on the 8.5" 10 bolt, and I know they are available for a 8.2" 10 bolt.

I have read that these are not good to use with high torque engines as they will fail. Actually seemed to be a safety issue.

what set up are you running and does anybody have an opinion on this? I heard to stay away from spacers.

Get a complete rearend assembly from 71/72 skylark (corporate 8 1/2); get aftermarket posi center, new gears, installation kit with axe bearings and seals. get driveshaft from donor car! 8.2 rear pinion is shorter than 8 1/2 pinion (about 7/8 inch) or shorten & re-balance your shaft. rear itself is bolt-in easy and bleed brakes.

    Re: REPO POSI UNITS

REPO POSI UNITS INFO IS A BIT WRONG...

We do have a unit from Auburn that can be used to fit the 3.23 and 3.42 ratios. With conversion bearings and redrilling the 3/8 holes you can use these Posis. I can set them up for you so it will basically bolt in to the rear with 3.23 gears and or 3.42 gears.

We are making the 3.42 gear set and yes they are coming along. It is a slow process but to get a good gear set a little time Now will go along way when you install them in your car. We want the fit to be as good as GM or why bother... Hang tight guys were working on it. Jim Mitschke

aftermarket 10 bolt 8.2 gears are not 1968-1970 buick 8.2 gears. The gears that are sold in the aftermarket that state B.O.P. 8.2 are for the 1964-1967 buick , Olds, and Pontiac rears.

They really should be called PONTIAC 10 bolt 8.2 gears. They fit all the pontiac 10 bolt 8.2 rear all the way to 1972. in 1968-1969 all the BOP rear diffs went from 3/8" shaft bolts right hand thread to 7/16" shaft and left handed thread bolts. So any aftermarket carrier auburn or Eaton being used in a Pontiac or buick with ORIGINAL FACTORY GEARS will need the 10 holes enlarged on the carrier ring gear flange to 7/16" to acomidate the ring gear.

If you use the aftermarket gears (pontiac 8.2 gears ) the posi units will work with NO mODS.

Hope this clears up some questions of the 8.2 aftermarket gears. They really only fit the 1964-1967 skylarks. Ok? Jim

Jim, sent you a PM. Thanks for the info. I know you have been working on these rears for awhile now and the 68/69 community surely appreciates it.

I guess i will wait for the 3.42 gears you are working on with the 8.2 auburn posi unit. Correct?

Total looking to be about $450 to the door and ready to bolt up?

    Thanks,
    Michael

Both the cars I have used the spacers in are driver-type cars, street machines.

    Both are rebuilt 350ci motors.

one has a Comp 260 cam (.450ish lift) with a 1800 stall converter and stock TH350 trans, 10 bolt 8.5 posi rear with 3.08 gears.

The other has a Comp 268 cam (.470ish lift) with a 2200 stall converter, rebuilt TH350 with manual/auto Transgo kit, 10 bolt 8.5 posi rear with 3.73 gears.

    RED LOCTITE on the bolts.

Neither setup has given any problems to date, but again they are not drag machines, they are street cruisers, mildly built. So while they do their share of burnouts and hard accellerations, they are not just straight out flogged.

I personally would not use a spacer if I intended any kind of serious track work, it seems like that would be asking for trouble...though I am not a track guy so I really wouldnt know.
