    Dear Jim,

I am glad you read this. I sent already an e-mail to your business adress (we were already in touch last year regarding my left axle...). Did you receive it?

No, the order was the correct one. back plate - bearing- retaining collar. The strange thing is that the bearing and the collar are not broken but let go of the axle shaft. On the other hand was it extremely difficult to get the bearing out of the axle housing.
Let me know what you think.

??? Weird. Axle bearing overheated and expanded and the axle press was lost do to this? Man that is a tough one? Jim

Wait, isn't the retaining ring supposed to be on the inboard side of the bearing, to prevent this from happening?

Since we're guessing, I bet the pieces of the bearing's inner race are sitting somewhere inside the axle tube or on the ground somewhere. That's what allowed the rest of the bearing assembly to pass over the retainer (?). Guessing root cause is the failure of the retaining plate due to some kind of extreme side load like a curb hit once upon a time.

Well spotted but the order of the parts was correct when it came apart..... It was just stupid me that put it back in the wrong order on the axle to take the picture... :(

---------- Post added at 10:07 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:50 AM ----------

The bearing is still one piece with no visible cracks. The axle slid out of the housing leaving the bearing stuck in the axle housing and the collar ring lay in the space between the bearing and the inner part of the housing.
However maybe the inner diameter of bearing/collar is not anymore what it is supposed to be, as you suggest.
Can anyone tell me what the inner diameter of the bearing / collar and the outer dimensions of the axle should be

This vehicle is 40+ yrs old so I have no clue what moron did stupid things to it in the past. Maybe someone hit something sliding sideways and damaged both axls, bearings etc... :blast:

This is what Timken says (see attached pic). It would be nice to know the OD of a new axle.

Joe, thanks for that. Very helpful.

In the meantime we went to a body shop and learnt the following:
    - bearing's inner diameter is exactly 35mm. As it should according to Timken.
    - outer diameter of axle is 2/100mm more. This requires the 5tons force to press it on.
    - the difference between axle and retaining collar should be 6/100mm, requiring a force of 20tons.

    Can somebody confirm?

The collar that came of my axle is apparently the root of this axle failure. It is not circleshaped but egg shaped, i.e. It did not have contact with the axle all around. It doesn't seem to be hardened steel either. No idea where this collar comes from. Scary!!!

one questions remains: I understand an axle is not 100% straight. How unstraight is ok? Not sure the question is clear...:Do No:

Hey I had that exact thing happen to me in 1987.
Was driving my 71 skylark, I heard a weird pop sound, looked in the rear view mirror to see if I ran over something, then thump, my car went down on 3 wheels, sparks a flyin I pulled off the road and noticed my wheel and axle crossing the road without me. That did number on my quarterpanel and door!
I never could figure out how it came out. I ended up finding another 10 bolt out of a junk yard. Of course that was back before the days of the internet to get some help.
I still have the car but not that rearend.

Good thing you stopped before it came all the way out like mine.

    Good luck.

I would swap in a complete rear out of a 71-72 Skylark.

    Sean,
    Is that a bolt in?
    What is the advantage?
probably not easy to find this kinda stuff over here.
