my am radio quit working on my gsx. i picked up an am-fm at last years nationals. im a mechanic but ive never done any radio swapping. is it a fairly routine swap or are there any differences i should know about? gotta have tunes when cruising and looking for a street race. thanks john l. 1970 qq gsx stage.1
There's nothing more than pulling the ashtray to gain access to the back of the radio a little bit better... Pull the knobs off the front of the radio and that will expose the buts holding the radio on by the shafts. This should release the radio. Make sure your wiring harness, antenna, and ground (if there) wires are pulled. The AM and FM radios should have the same connections. Good luck!
There should also be a strap and small bolt holding the back of the radio to a dash support member, if no one has messed with it before. Tricky to get to, but not bad. It sometimes helps to pull the glove box liner out. - Bill
Easy swap, did it on mine some years back. Just be patient and take your time. All the plugs and mounts fit the same way. I will tell you this, most new aftermarket speakers you get these days are 8 ohms. The factory stereos like to see 4 ohms. You will loose volume and performance with 8's. I experienced this and didn't know why untill I read the article in the GSXtra.
thanks for replying dino! i never even thought about the speakers. since i have the original am in my gsx i assume i still have the factory speakers. as soon as i take my car out of storage ill swap the radios and let you know how it went. take care john l.
speakers the 60-70's cars used 10 ohm speakers . 8 ohm speakers were introduced a few years later followed by 4 ohm speakers . i would guess that all modern radios/stereos are all 4 ohm output . audiovox is one a few manufacturers that produce 4/8 ohm speakers . the old radios for your, upto or beyond 1972, will work with 8 ohm speakers . i am currently using 8 ohms . gerry
