Questions on Z bars, 350 + 455 and misc. other...

I have searched this site for info and still have a fuzzy idea on where/ what... I have a 70 455 4 speed that (driveline-wise) is apart. As the 455 is being rebuilt, I am placing in a freshly rebuilt 350 (on correct 350 motor mounts). Now, do I need the 350 specific Z bar and 350 ball stud that bolts into the motor? Is there anything else I should/ need to get for the BBB to SBB 4 speed conversion?
Thanks for the help. Can't wait to drive this car!!!!
    Thank you all!

  2. You need a SBB Z bar and at least the upper pedal to Z bar rod. You could use the lower clevis style rod, just adjust it down to get the right free paly and use the corresponding clevis style clutch fork.

Oh yeah and the ball stud will interchange. It's just a matter of getting the old one out of the 455.

I'm not sure about '70's cars, but I think you may also need a different linkage from the z-bar to the clutch fork. I think in the the 350 setup, it is longer. And again, I'm not sure, but since the z-bar is different, does that mean the rod from the pedal is different? Guess I'm not helping much, just re-stating your questions. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

By the way, does the shifter end up in the same spot when you do this? And exhaust connections? I am in the middle of a 4-speed conversion and ended up with all kinds of issues to resolve.

Well, I guess Paul and I were typing simultaneously. He must be a faster typist. He has the answers to my first part. How about the second part?

  4. To answer your second question, the shifter has nothing to do with the linkage in regards to where it ends up (I assume you mean when shifting.)

That's all regulated by the stops on the shifter body itself.

Actually you might be right. As I recall, the 350 lower rod is way longer then the clevis style Kleiner repro. But it's all avail. through YO anyway for a SB.

Actually, what I was referring to was the shifter's relationship to the tunnel hole. Probably a stupid question, but I've got a million of 'em.

  6. Not a stupid question at all.

There's 5 mounting holes on the tail shaft of a trans. The comp plus shifter body has 3 holes. And the shifter to trans mounting bracket only goes on one way to accomodate both so you can't really mess it up. So it's all relative.

Hope this explanation helps? I think I confused myself.

    Thanks Guys!
OK Paul, I have ALL of the parts off of the 455 for the 4 speed. So, I will need the 350 Z bar, the longer (non-clevis, BBB style) linkage from the Z bar to the clutch fork (as I am looking at the diagram in the service manual) and the upper clutch pedal rod (which looks the same/ has the same 'ROD L' designation in the book for both the 350 and BBB)? I think the upper clutch fork 'ROD L' is the same??? :Dou: . This is starting to become a headache.... Maybe I should just throw in an auto and call it a day :af: ....

  8. No the rod length is shorter. I know it is. Somewhere on here there's a side by side picture.

And don't go auto. There's SBB stuff available from here. Just post in the parts wanted section.

Or wait until the Big Block is done. I meant to ask why do two motor swaps?

I assume your BBB rod to the fork is the clevis style? If so and you go with a none clevis style, won't you have to replace the fork as well? The clevis fork has no "pocket" for the end of the rod. You'll also need a spring from the z-bar to the fork to help keep the rod from popping out.

And come on, fess up. I live in CT and there's no snow. You just miss the smell of burning rubber in the morning!

I have some small block stuff . I might sell it . Just need to know the parts you need . It sounds like the lower rod the ball for the engine side and the z bar?
