My cousin and I plan on installing a fresh 350 motor and 700R4 transmission into his 86 Monte Carlo SS. The car HAS a 305 with the same tranny. My question is how much time should I lay out for this project and how difficult would it be to do it? Also is it possible to do it in his driveway or will I need a lift and all the jazz? And what kind of tools will I need to make this easier.

Anytime I ever changed a motor or tranny I was able to do it in my driveway..........once I did it with a chainfall hanging from the rafters...........next time I just rented a cherry picker (engine hoist) after hearing the rafters crackling

Once you get the motor and tranny in there, then put the car up on stands to get under and connect the exhaust and tranny linkage and put the driveshaft back in.

It's not that hard, but it's easier with one extra guy to help line things up while you lower the thing into the car. I think you can install them while they are both connected together if you are careful and if there's enough extra room. Good luck!:)
