Just finished the disassembly for the frame-off on my '70 GS convertible, and I have a question regarding the neutral safety switch. Have you seen one mounted like this? I always thought that they were mounted in the steering column.....
I can't give you exact years of usage but my 70 Skylark Convertible with buckets has the neutral safety switch on the shifter just like yours. I can't remember on my 71 cars but will look tomorrow!
Not Duane or Brad ... but ... My '71 does not have that arrangement, but, the shifter has the holes and a place for wires. I always thought that was a scrapped plan. Thanks for sharing the picture. Now I'm wondering if my '70 has that setup. Matt
That looks like a 68 (maybe 69 too?) shifter. The neutral safety switch is there because with the ignition on the dash the column doesn't turn, so it has to be mounted WHERE you shift.
I think my 70 GS is the same I will snap a photo of it when I get home. the column does rotate. this is how the gear selector on the dash works.
Early 70 cars had the neutral safety switch mounted on the shifter, and then mid-year they went to steering column mount and stayed that way. Therefore, you have an early 1970 car, probably built before Dec. 69. Hope this answers the question! John Chamberlain
Mine was produced in 3rd week of november 69. at the kansas city plant. Thanks John for the clarification.:beer
Makes sense. My 70 is late built (April) and everything else is late 70. Neutral safety is on the column.
Thanks, John! As always, the guys on this board are a wealth of information! Hope you all have a GREAT Thanksgiving!
Seems like my car is a May car and has the switch on the shifter. Unless someone replaced the wiring harness at the same time it's original too.... Hmm... The things we see from 60's and 70's Detroit iron....
