I was looking at my boot chome molding (both sides) and noticed the passenger side has dents all over one end. I suppose I could have it fixed and have both parts cleaned and buffed but that will be expensive. My question: are there any other GM cars that have the same boot trim parts that fit a 71 GS, maybe a Chevelle or 442? I think I remember Year One supplied boot molding replacement parts for a GS but I just cruised there web site and didn't see it. Thanks, Mike New Jersey Formerly a 71 GS 350 automatic convertible non numbers wreck, Alpine white with green interior and black convertible top. Now.. in it's fourth year in restoration .. 71 GS Stage 1, 4 speed convertible, Alpine white with green interior and convertible top, meticulously detailed in every way. :bglasses:
Mike All "A" body Gmcars from 69 to 72 used the same chrome trim. I am not sure if anyone has started to repop them yet. Dave
I would want original over the repro stuff. I bought some original for my 64 convertible and it had alot of small dents and scratchs since the boot clips are metal. I had a guy make it look brand new but it cost 135.00. Be careful on who you use because some people are hacks!
post some pics of the damage if possible...we may be able to "guide" you through repairing it. With enough time you can get these looking pretty good without even going near a buffer/polisher.
Re: Stainless Trim Mike, I'm attempting a clean-up of my chrome boot moldings on my convertible and if I cannot get them dent free and the scratches buffed-out, I let you know. My understanding is the aftermarket moldings are cheep looking and hopefully you'll still have a replacement set. Thanks for the reply. Mike New Jersey
Mike, Flyn is right. It is called a "pinchweld molding." Use this term when looking for parts, or getting it estimated for repairs...:beer Dan
1200 micro mesh makes them thing shine so brite you'll be blinded, well sorta, wax it after lapping it imediatley cres oxidizes like right now... I use Mirror Glaze sealer, BBUZZ, Out...........
im sure they are fixable but it sounds like its time consuming i just looked at mine and i could use the same thing, lots of little dents
There is one joint in the very back center. They are stainless not chrome. I have straightened and polished several but it can be a job. If you buy a used one it will need at least polishing. So I suggest you send your old one out and it will come back better than new. Theyusually charge about $15 a foot.
No Richpop---you ARE correct....I am finding more and more IT'S THE VENDORS THAT AREN'T REAL SURE ABOUT THE PARTS... not the owners:laugh: Seriously, the more repro parts I buy the less impressed I am by some of them and recently I have been buying A LOT of them for a couple projects I am helping on. Here we are...35-40 years after these cars were originally produced and with all the increases in technology, etc and many of the parts are not even close in terms of quality. It really makes you appreciate GM and all the $$$ they spent designing and manufacturing the original parts. The piece is TWO PIECES...the "joint" Jim mentions above is part of one of the pieces (didn't want you to interpret his answer as the "joint" constituting a third piece). The joint is where the stainless was widened at the end of one piece so the other piece can slip into it. As I said before...these pieces can be rehabbed at home (with great results) but the key is to not get in a hurry. Thanks
